Alternative Hairstyles for Long Hair

From LoveToKnow Hair

Many people assume a punk hair style is going to be short and spiky, but alternative hairstyles for long hair are just as popular, if not more so. With long hair, you can put the “alternate” in alternative, changing your look as you like while staying true to your alt roots.

Be alternative with your long locks.

Famous Alternative Hairstyles for Long Hair

Whatever you may think of her, you can’t deny that Amy Winehouse is a headline-maker. Every time she ends up in the news, it’s another opportunity to admire her unique style. Winehouse makes 1950s beehive hairdos the ultimate in both alt and retro-chic. Neither punk nor Goth nor truly retro, Winehouse stands out with her own look. It’s a twist on Audrey Hepburn’s famous updo style in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and is easily replicated for anyone who wants to combine styles.

Alt rocker Avril Lavigne has sported several styles, one of which is the striking pop punk style – an alternative hairstyle for long hair that allows a woman to dye half the length of her hair in a different, usually lighter, color. If you bleach the hair out first, you can use temporary hair color and have a different color on a regular basis. Be sure to give your hair a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week while you maintain this style, or the dyed hair might dry out and even start breaking. True, you can then try a Kelly Osborne-like skate punk style with the hair in uneven lengths, but it’s not the same as maintaining your long hair.

Going Goth

Many Gothic hairstyles actually demand long hair, to the point where a lot of Goths get hair extensions. The neo-Victorian or medieval look of a more romantic Goth style lends itself to long hair. Although hair that is dyed black is the most notable trademark of the Goth style, many women whose Goth look has a pre-Raphaelite influence prefer to dye their hair a deep shade of red and wear it in long curls that tumble all the way down the back.

Long hair can work very well for a variety of Goth stylings, although be aware that many of the styles can be hard on the hair. To create big hair, for example, requires a lot of backcombing and that can make for some nasty knots. A lot of crimping and curling can also be involved, which is very hard on hair ends, especially if they’ve been dyed as well. As much as possible, try to use less harsh styles and products on your hair – foam curlers set in damp hair, for example, often need nearly no chemicals to create perfect ringlets. That way, your hair is spared for a more radical style another day.

Emo Styles

Emo hair styles, the mix of rock and Goth styles, are perfect when considering alternative hairstyles for long hair that don’t require too much styling or product. The cuts have sharp, jagged edges that tend to frame the face and fall at a variety of lengths. Mixed with a glossy color – either a heightened version of your natural shade or something wildly different – this is a striking style without being overly extreme (unless you want to be). However, the cuts work best on women whose hair is straight and relatively fine. If you have thick, curly or wavy hair and want to wear it in a long emo style, be prepared to spend a lot of time with a good ceramic hair straightener. Consult with your hairdresser as to a style that best works with your hair before you commit to a cut.

Remember: It’s Alt!

Since the whole point of being alt is not to look like everyone else, have fun and experiment! It’s your hair and whatever makes you feel best is what it should be.
