Black Men's Hair Waves
From LoveToKnow Hair
Black men's hair waves can look sexy and give a man a sophisticated, well-groomed appearance. African American men with hair with a coarse texture can achieve this style. Waves or the 360 wave are some of the most popular black hair styles for men. There also products available that loosen the texture of tightly curled, kinky hair, producing smooth, loose curls that can also be brushed down into waves.
Black Men's Hair Waves: Natural Approaches
The most natural approach to getting waves is to wait until it is at least a half of an inch long. Add a pomade to the hair. Some popular pomades include Murray's , Deep Wave, and Sport-n-Wave. Wave pomades are found in most drugstores or beauty supply stores where black hair products are sold. Put about a quarter-sized amount in your hands and rub it into your hair. If the product does not easily dissolve in your hands, you can put a warm towel on your head to help it melt and mix into your hair.
Next, take a natural bristle brush and brush your hair in one direction. Make sure that you brush your entire head and that you don't brush against your hair or in the opposite direction that it grows in. Most men who are trying to get waves sleep in a scarf, called a doo rag. The friction from the doo rag helps develop the waves while men are sleeping. Doo-rags can and should be worn at home, but like curlers, it is usually unacceptable to wear a doo-rag to work or even in public.
Men constantly brush their hair to create waves, but they should only brush it about three times a day after putting pomade in it and letting a warm towel soften the pomade and soften their hair. Some pomades can cause build-up and flaking. If the product flakes or any irritation occurs, discontinue use of the product and try a different brand.
Waves with Chemicals
There are products on the market that can loosen the texture in black men's hair, producing loose curls that appear natural. These products are called texturizers, and they differ from the curly perms of the 1980s in that men do not have to roll their hair on curl rods during the perm process. Adding greasy curl activator is also not necessary for most texturizers to work.
Texturizer kits are available over-the-counter in stores where black beauty supply products are sold. Understand, however, that texturizers are a chemical product that will change the structure of the hair. They are not used in low, to-the-scalp cuts. They are used in longer hair, like in a short afro. Texturizers can also damage the hair and make it thinner. To achieve a waves using a texturizer, follow the directions on the box and brush the hair if it is curly. When using a new perms or chemical products, always test an area of your hair first, before you apply it to your full head, to see if the product causes irritation to the scalp.
Texturizer or Natural?
Try the natural method, and keep trying until the hair waves. If one part of the hair doesn't wave into a black men's hair wave style, try making sure that the hair pomade is distributed evenly to that area and make sure that the area is brushed in the correct direction. Remember, it's necessary to brush the hair in one direction, the direction that the hair naturally grows in. Ask a barber for help in determining the proper direction to brush the hair.
Although chemical texturizers can more than likely easily wave the hair, there is a greater chance for having hair loss or scalp damage when using any chemicals. Using a brush, pomade, and a doo rag will give black men's hair waves that are sexy and natural.
