Blonde Hair Styles
From LoveToKnow Hair
Blonde hair is one of the most popular shades, but what blonde hair styles highlight sunny locks without seeming overdone or ostentatious? The key to the best blonde styles is knowing what works not only for the hair itself, but for your personality.
Shades of Blonde
There are hundreds of shades of blonde hair, from creamy light locks with the slightest tinge of gold to rich honey-colored hair with multiple highlights. The first step toward an attractive blonde hair style is choosing the right shade.
- If you are a natural blonde, examine your color and see if you’d like to lighten or highlight it. Natural blonde hair darkens over time, and many blondes opt for mild treatments to keep naturally bright shades.
- When choosing a blonde shade, particularly if you have naturally dark hair, be sure to match the color to your skin tone. Very pale skin may look washed out and sickly against a bright blonde, whereas darker skin is best complimented by warmer hair colors.
- Consider adding highlights to create depth and texture in the hair, but use a maximum of two or three highlight colors to avoid a streaked, patchwork look. Choosing highlight colors close to your natural shade will keep the style colorful longer as your natural color grows back in over time.
Once you are satisfied with your blonde hue, you need to choose a hair style that can best accent your golden locks.
Types of Blonde Hair Styles
Basic hair style considerations apply to any hair color, and it is important to remember them before adapting a style simply to highlight a new shade of blonde.
- The style should complement your face shape to avoid unbalanced emphasis of different facial features.
- You should be comfortable managing the style with daily maintenance and styling.
- The style must be cared for properly with appropriate styling aids, trims, and products to keep it looking its best.
If you take care of your hair style, it will look fabulous no matter what your hair color. To highlight blonde hair, however, there are several types of styles that offer more pizzazz.
For Natural Blondes
Naturally blonde hair is often thin and delicate. Because of this, long hair may look lifeless, and it is necessary to use volumizing shampoos and conditioners to add lift to the hair. Short or medium length styles work best because the hair is not heavy enough to be weighted down. Layered styles are also popular because they eliminate some of the hair’s weight without sacrificing length. Bobs and shags are trendy blonde hair styles, and curls can add volume and emphasize highlights simultaneously.
For the finest hair, the best options may be to avoid emphasizing the hair’s lack of volume. Instead, opt for fun styles that stay close to the head, such as ponytails and pigtails for casual looks. Hair accessories such as barrettes, pins, or head bands can also add flair to light hair without needing additional volume.
While many blondes opt for carefree, flirty styles, on formal occasions a more sophisticated approach is necessary. Updos are natural choices, and blondes can easily create sleek looks because the thinness of the hair is easy to twist into stunning arrangements without unwieldy bulk. French twists are particularly popular, as are other easy formal styles.
For Dyed Blondes
Individuals who dye their hair blonde have more style options because they are not restricted by the fine texture of naturally blonde hair. At the same time, however, the color treatments necessary to achieve light blonde shades can be extreme, and may damage hair severely – particularly longer hair. Intense conditioning treatments, particularly on the ends of hair, can help avert or control this damage, while shorter styles utilize only healthier hair that is more resilient to the chemical treatments.
Because many new blondes want to emphasize their new color, layered styles are one of the most popular choices. Carefully crafted layers bring out the best in highlights and add carefree fun to most styles.
Dyed blondes should also consider using special color-enhancing shampoo formulas specific for blonde hair. These subtly lightening shampoos will help the color last longer, keeping the style fresh and exhilarating for weeks.
For the Best Blonde Hair Styles
With the wide range of styling products including volumizers, conditioners, and shapers available, there are no specific hair styles unavailable to blondes. The best blonde styles, however, are those that are natural and fun, without seeming too forced either with an extreme color choice or overly-styled hair. Whether you are a natural blonde or are interested in best displaying your new golden locks, properly caring for both the hair color and the individual style is the key to a great look that will be both stylish and enjoyable.

-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyHi, I was thinking about doing something like the 2nd picture on there, my hair is a dark dirty blonde, and I'm not sure how it will look with shorter hair. I've had long hair for almost my whole life (lol finnaly wanting 2 change it) and I' not sure how it owuld look. I might get it colored or highlighted, but I'm not sure if my mom will let me. Any suggestions?
-- Contributed by: BriannaHi Danielle, Use a high quality conditioner with natural ingredients when you wash your hair to make it easier to comb through. Spraying a leave in conditioner in your hair can also help keep in moisturized and tangle free.
