Bob Hair Styles

Bob vs. Mod
Like bob haircuts, mod styles are in high fashion, and many celebrities wear their hair in this manner. A mod style is similar to a bob, but it adds more texture to the cut and is a lighter type of cut. With a mod style, a hair dresser will cut bangs that are heavy and pushed to one side of the head. People with this sort of cut usually use some sort of styling product to shape the hair and give it a "swooping" look.
About Bob Hair Styles
There are many different bobs from which to choose, and a bob's length should be chosen based on the length and shape of a person's face. In addition, bobs can be evenly cut or cut at an angle. Bangs can be added to a bob haircut, which can look cute on some people. With all of these options to consider, it's a good idea to flip through magazines and find pictures of bob haircuts you like and take those pictures to a hair stylist for their opinion on whether or not that bob will be a flattering cut.
Types of Bob Looks
There are a tremendous number of variations on the standard or classic bob. A few notable looks include the following.
Asymmetrical Bobs
Just about everybody has seen pictures of asymmetrical bob hair styles in magazines, and some may have seen this cut on a friend or acquaintance. However, it is not as popular of a haircut as a regular bob. An asymmetrical bob is one in which one side of the head sports much longer (or shorter) hair than the other side of the head. Asymmetrical bobs can also be achieved by cutting hair on the back of the head much shorter than on the sides. Currently, a popular way to achieve asymmetry in a hair style is to cut the bangs in an asymmetrical fashion so that they hang heavier on one side. This is a great look for someone who wants an alternative style or a look that has a bit of an edge.
The Pob or Reverse Bob
The pob, or Posh's bob, popularized by Victoria Beckham, is a unique translation of the bob. In this look the hair is longer in front and shorter or 'stacked' in the back, and is sometimes referred to as a stacked bob. This styles does not include bangs and may be done in a slightly asymetrical fashion. Rihanna is another celebrity known for wearing this style.
Long Bobs
This blunt cut works well for those who want the polished look of a classic bob with a modern, slightly more casual feel. A longer bob falls somewhere between the chin and shoulder length, and this blunt cut can be done with or without bangs.
Flipped Bob
A flipped bob can also be done with or without bangs. This flirty is done, as the name implies, by creating a slight upward flip on the ends of the hair. It is typically seen on medium length bobs. A stylist might cut the hair with a razor to create this type of look, or a blunt bob can achieve this look with the aid of a little styling product and a large barreled curling iron or round brush and blow dryer.
Choppy or Layered Bob
A choppy bob adds extra texture and provides a versatile contemporary option. Choppy, face framing layers can be added to the bob look for a casual style. Texturizer can be used to play up the choppiness of this type of bob, or use a smoothing serum and flat iron to turn this cut into a sleeker style more akin to the classic bob.
Bob Haircuts on Curly Hair
This year's stylish bob hair styles are usually cut with great precision. A bob can range from hair that is cut at the ear level to hair that lies just at the shoulders. Straight hair can look great with a bob style of just about any length.
Bob haircuts on people with curly hair tend to look better if they are of the longer cut variety. Short bob haircuts on people with very curly hair can make a person's head look like a triangle. So, for anyone with very curly hair, consider that a short bob haircut may bounce up high on the face and look shorter than desired.
Highlights with a Bob
Highlights can look great with any hairstyle, and bobs are no exception. A professional hair stylist or colorist should be used to make sure that the highlights match the original hair color and so they are not overly obvious. Highlights should be strategically added so that they enhance the texture of the hair and add a stylish edge to a cute haircut.
Managing Bob Hair Styles
Depending on the type of bob style you choose, the time it takes to manage the style will vary. A choppy bob has a more casual carefree look that might only require some styling aid and a few minutes of blow drying. A more polished bob look, however, might require using the flat iron to achieve a sculpted style along with smoothing or shine serums.
Like any style, bobs should receive regular trims every four to six weeks to keep them looking attractive.

Thanks for the tips, Kat! It's great to have ideas for even more hair styles.

I have a short asymmetrical curly bob (one side around ear length, then side-parted and swooped over so that the other side is chin-length). My hair curls in loose spirals about the width of a Sharpie pen and is fine in texture -- tighter curls or coarser texture would not handle this style as well. But it is definitely possible for curly-haired women to look good with a bob, as long as you find an experienced hairdresser who understands how to cut curly hair. The shaping for this cut is absolutely crucial, because if you wet the curly hair and then just cut it off as if you were giving a straight-haired person a bob, the curly hair will not only shorten but form an unappealing triangle shape on the head.

You can try a smoothing or anti-frizz serum or leave in conditioner to keep your hair smooth. As for having it curl under, you can try curling it by hand when it's still a little wet and then let it air dry naturally. Same thing with your bangs - straighten them by hand when they're a bit wet, then add a bit of mousse or spray to keep them in place.
