Celebrity hair styles are always a hot topic of conversation for those of us who lust after the locks of Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson and the rest. In the nineties, we were all asking our hairdressers for a "Rachel", after Jennifer Aniston's character on Friends. By the turn of the century we wanted a "Carrie", in the hopes of replicating the tumbling curls of Sex and the City's lead character.

She may never repeat the popularity she once found in Friends, but Jennifer's hair is still much admired, and her style much-requested by women looking for a new 'do. The short layers of the "Rachel" has now been replaced with a less structured style, which works well with Jen's casual look.

A girl who changes her hairstyle almost as often as her boyfriends, Sienna swapped her long locks for a short, choppy bob recently. The change was made by necessity rather than design – it was required for her role in the new film Factory Girl – but the gamine, ‘60s style cut flattered Sienna's face and is sure to be seen on a host of other celebrities in the future. Scarlett's platinum blonde curls are reminiscent of old-style Hollywood glamour – a style that Christina Aguilera has been seen with recently, too. This is an ultra sophisticated look for the red carpet, and gives Scarlett true movie star style.

Desperate Housewives star Eva's look is polished and glamorous, whether she wears her dark hair loose around her face, or swept up in one of character Gabrielle's ‘60s-style updos.

Britney Spears

There are some celebrity hair styles that noone wants to copy. Topping that list is singer Britney Spears, whose hair has been seen in an increasingly bizarre selection of styles over the past few years. When she makes the effort, Britney's blonde hair can look great, but more and more often she's pictured with it pulled up on top of her head and looking unwashed.

Natalie Portman's recent skinhead look also gets the thumbs down from those of us who don't have Natalie's bone structure. While the short crop looked fabulous on Natalie herself, it's not everyone who can carry off such a strong look.

As tempting as it is to ask your hairdresser to make you look exactly like your favorite star, it's important to remember that not all hairstyles will suit you. When you're choosing a new hairstyle, think carefully about the shape of your face, and try to work out what will and won't suit you.

Think, too, about your own personal style. While Gwen Stefani's blonde quiff is the perfect accessory to her quirky style, it could look a little less appropriate in your stuffy office.

Finally, ask yourself how much time you're willing to spend on your hair. Jennifer Aniston's hair may be beautiful, but you can bet that she doesn't wake up with it looking that way. While some styles are much higher maintenance than others, it's best to find out just how much work you'll have to put into your hair care routine before you decide to copy any celebrity hair styles.

If you do decide to go for a glamorous celebrity look, take several photographs of the proposed style to the salon to give the stylist a visual to work with. The best photos will be shot in bright (but not glaring) light and will show the ‘do from several different angles so that it can be fully replicated.
