Classic Punk Hair Ideas

When the punk rock scene started in the late '60s and early '70s, punk hair made its striking debut. Inspired by the musicians in garage bands such as Blondie, the Velvet Underground, and the Ramones, these rebels of pop music gave something raw and edgy to the hair industry and their music fans. Punk hair, just like its music, was an experiment in breaking the rules and creating its own set of standards.

Spikes

Any style that embodies a piecy spiky look naturally falls into the punk hair category. While mom was busy slicking back her children's hair, making sure every piece was in place, the spike became the rebellious choice, quite opposite of that perfectly groomed look. This style shouts, " I don't care what people think!" A tad bit intimidating, spikes add an edge and toughness to any basic hair style.

For a classic spike look, apply a firm hold gel to wet hair, push hair out from the head as far as possible while separating the ends to create a pieced effect. A few twists to the ends will create even more separation. Let hair dry thoroughly without interruption, and you're ready to rock. Classic spikes work best on shorter hair, and for those with longer hair, backcombing and hairspray may be necessary to achieve longer or "liberty spikes."

Mohawks

Mohawks are a popular classic punk hair option for both men and women. Whereas spikes have gone to the wayside and are primarily reserved for those emulating a punk look, the mohawk has stayed mainstream and has crossed all genres. Believed to be worn by the early Mohican and the Mohawk tribes, the classic mohawk style is typically shaved on the sides and the back with a remaining crest of hair left on the center of the scalp. The mohawk can be worn in varying lengths, the shorter lengths being easier to style with just a tad bit of gel or hairspray. The longer the hair, although more noticeable, will take more work to achieve dramatic results and hold. In keeping with the creativity of this style, it's rumored that punk enthusiasts have relied on products such as peanut butter, gelatin, and even molasses to create hold and height. No matter how you style it, the mohawk is definitive of punk scene hair.

Liberty Spikes

Liberty spikes are another staple of the punk scene and are a combination of the spike and mohawk. To create this look, get your inspiration from the Statue of Liberty. This striking style works best on long hair and makes quite a statement!

Fauxhawks

Fauxhawks are a variation of the mohawk without the shaved sides. If you want to create the look of a mohawk without committing to a shaved head, a fauxhawk is certainly your best option. Many women choose the fauxhawk and apply it to their longer lengths. With the addition of funky hair color, fauxhawks are just as drastic and bold as their related styles. Banana clips were a popular hair tool used in the '80s to create a fauxhawk style.

Go Wild

If you want to create any of these unique looks, keep in mind that punk styles were inspired by people's desire for drastic rebellion from the norm. From the music they made and listened to, to their dress and wild hair, these classic punk hair styles embody the very essence of the punk scene. Go wild with your style to try out modern punk looks that break the rules of today’s hair styles.
