Current Hair Styles for Men
From LoveToKnow Hair
When LovetoKnow Hair went on a mission to find current trends for men's hair cuts, we looked no further than Shampoo Avenue B, a hip salon in Manhattan. Owner Harley Dinardo knows just how to blend his creative passion for hair trends and music, creating urban hair with a rockin' edge.
With over 10 years in the profession, Harley trained at the Aveda Advanced Academy and specialized in innovative cutting, color, and editorial hair styling. When he's not busy rocking on stage with the band, White Light Motorcade, he's behind the scene in this unique salon, sharing his passion for artistic cuts.
If you're seeking a cool and hip new mens style, this east coast style rocker has got a ton of tips to share.
What peaked your interest in the beauty industry?
HD: I love music, I like clothes and I like cool hair. I've been in rock and roll bands since high school. So, it's all very similar in my mind. Creating music, creating style etc... I just wanted to bring it all together.
Who is your personal style icon?
HD: It's hard to pick just one. If I had to pick one, Serge Gainsbourg. He summed up casual cool.
Current Hair Styles for Men Trends
What are the current hair styles for men?
HD: Short, cropped on the sides and the crown, long in the front. I like it because it's more rock and roll. More fashionable. The same guys that now look like they could be in a British band, a few years ago would have a normal short haircut. I like that. We're moving in the right direction.
With the younger generation sporting the "emo/punk" look, do you see trends moving away from that, or do you think this creative and expressive hair trend will continue?
HD: Again, I'm impressed with the style changes and individuality that I'm seeing with younger guys' haircuts. The fact that kids are wearing their hair like that tells me they will soon take it to the next level, making it more drastic and more their own. To me, that's the ultimate. I always try to steer a client down their own path.
For men wishing to add an instant rocker edge to their look, what are your product recommendations?
HD: Aveda Control Paste.
Color and Cuts
With wavy hair and perms back in vogue, is men's hair traveling down that 80s path?
HD: No, I don't think so. Women? Sure. Men? No. Not now anyway. We're not ready for that just yet.
Are more men indulging in hair color these days? If so, what trends are current?
HD: Not that I see. We're on the east coast. LA rockers love to color their hair. Not NY guys.
Any styling or cut suggestions for men dealing with premature hair loss?
HD: If it's just a small amount of hair loss, I would suggest Xfusion, a hair follicle thickener. Aveda's Hair Potion is also helpful. For more drastic hair loss, I recommend cutting it as short as possible. If it's just a receding hairline, I recommend not hiding it, but exaggerating it. In other words part it right on the peak, or push it back just using your hands with some light product. It shows confidence and that's a really attractive quality.
Grooming Tips
What is your number one hair DON'T?
HD: Don't ever grow your hair extra long in the front to cover thinning hair. Hair looks much fuller when it's short.
Since facial hair is one of the easiest ways to change your look, do you see any changes or trends in facial hair grooming?
HD: Oh yeah... Big time. Everyone in a band has grown a beard at some point in the last year. Beards have been in for a while now. Clean shaven is the alternative, but it's coming back.
Thank you so much for sharing the current hair styles for men and your expert tips with our readers!
HD: Thank you.
