Dry Shampoo
From LoveToKnow Hair
Whether you’re camping, roughing it in the wilderness, or simply tired of the daily chore of shampooing and styling hair, a dry shampoo may be a suitable alternative. Often times, when beating the clock, shampooing hair in the traditional method is just not an option. Centuries ago, powders used regularly to matte and finish the hair. Today, we rely on liquid cleansers prior to styling the hair, although a dry shampoo and the ease of use is a great solution for lightly freshening the scalp in between shampooing.
Shampooing the scalp and the hair need not be a daily ritual. Unless you partake in extreme sports, outdoor excursions or have a physical or labor intensive activity that requires a lather, shampooing is not required daily. The reason many people feel the need to lather up is often to remove the oil and shine that builds upon on the scalp. Why not take an earth-friendly and natural approach to beauty and treat oily scalp with a powdered cleanser instead?
Benefits of Dry Shampoo
Unlike their liquid counterparts, dry shampoos lightly freshen the scalp and the hair without the need of burdensome rinsing and lathering.
For years, many campers and outdoorsmen have relied on dry shampoo to reduce the oil buildup on the scalp. Today, many women seek oil absorbing hair products to create a bedhead, slept in style that is full of texture and body.
When to Use Dry Shampoo
A dry shampoo may be the perfect solution for those that need cleansing but are limited in water resources or their ability to properly cleanse the scalp.
The following conditions may be suitable for a dry shampoo:
- Outdoor excursions
- Those seeking to remove oils without cleansing
- Elderly or handicapped individuals who find shampooing problematic or inconvenient
- Those seeking to add body or a matted finish to the hair
In addition to these products, some people use baby powder or talc powder to remove oils and shine from the hair and the scalp.
Getting Wet
Although these products and formulas freshen the hair and remove oil build up, regular shampooing is still recommended for hygienic purposes and to remove hair care products. It will not remove dirt or odors from the hair, nor will it combat many scalp conditions such as dandruff. To properly treat any type of lice infestation or scalp irritation, liquid shampoos and treatments are required and recommended.
Homemade Cleansers
Looking to create your own version of a dry shampoo? Take a peek in the pantry and gather up any of the following ingredients:
- Cornstarch
- Baby powder
- Flour
- Baking soda
- Ground oatmeal
Although the application techniques may leave a little to be desired, these ingredients can quickly remove the oils that wreck havoc on a good hair day. To apply, pour a small amount of any of the above ingredients in a small bowl, Lightly dip fingers in the product and tap the powder directly on the scalp. Brush hair thoroughly following application to evenly distribute the oil removing powder.
For ease of use, consider filling up any empty container such as a seasoning jar or powder bottle and distribute the product in just a few sprinkles.
Although dry shampoo absorbs oil from the scalp, it will not scent the hair. To add subtle fragrance to your hair, spritz hair with your favorite perfume or odor removing freshener.
