Emo Guy Hairstyles: Get the Cut

Emo style encompasses a wide range of styles in both the fashion and hair world. Emos have a certain “emotional” aura about them. The fashion, emo hair color, piercings and accessories associated with this style set emos apart from ordinary run-of-the-mill fashion trends.

There are several different cuts popular among the emo guy crowd. Each is unique and made individual through the styling and coloring of the cut. These basic cuts can be achieved with a pair of scissors at home or in the chair of a professional stylist.

Emo Shag

This cut is by far the most popular emo hair style for guys. Long, side bangs frame a standard spiky cut. Ask your stylist to create a long side swept bang (hair may need to grow out first). Next, snip V shapes into the hair to texturize. The back should be kept shorter, roughly 1-2” long.

  • Tip: If cutting at home, bend at waist, grab chunks of hair and slide scissors downward to the floor, slicing the hair 1-2” from scalp. Work from one side of the head to the other. Shake and check cut.

Styling: This emo style requires lots of product and styling tools to interchange the look. After ideal length and cut has been achieved, dry hair thoroughly. Straighten bangs using a heated straightening iron. Next, work a large dollop of hair wax or molding paste through the ends of hair. Pull hair up and on end at the crown and the back of the head. Smooth bang forward and to the side.

  • Tip: Variations of this style can be achieved by altering length of bangs or interior hair length.

Skullet

Certainly not for the faint of heart, the skullet is a modern blend of mullet meets skull. It sounds a little scary, and really isn’t the most flattering of cuts, but if you’re game for change and feel confident with this type of extreme cut, a skullet can sure make a great emo statement. The cut is pretty simplistic: shave head bald, leave sides long. For added impact, add some punky color to the remaining hair. Get ready for heads to turn.

  • Tip: Prepare for your mother to faint.

Long and Layered

Another popular emo guy hairstyle is long hair with a short choppy bang. This style works best with fine straight hair or Asian blends. Grow hair out to desired length and chop bangs super short and jagged with a pair of scissors (making inverted V-snippets) or ask a stylist to work a razor through your bang to texturize. Ask your stylist to add layers to your hair to create break and definition. This style can be shagged up with molding pastes and creams.

Emo Hair Color

Emo hair color is known for its vibrant and intense allure. If you’re coloring your emo style, it’s best to use chunks of bright color rather than overall hair color. Most emo styles are highlighted or low lighted with punk tones such as red, blue, or green. Manic Panic is a must- try hair coloring option for brilliant results. To add bright vivid chinks of hair color yourself, pull sections of hair (about 1” wide) away from scalp and run color throughout the section, from scalp to ends.

  • Tip: Aim to color 3-4 sections to err on the side of caution. You can always experiment with more color if needed. Process as instructed. Rinse and style, as instructed above.

Creating Emo Looks

Short Emo Shag

Emo style is hard to define -- it’s truly as distinctive as the individual. As you practice with emo style, you’ll find certain looks work better for you than others. It’s always best to consider your face shape and skin coloring and find a look that flatters your features.

Although the world may seem more open-minded and liberal, not every emo style will prove socially acceptable. Expect lots of attention and second glances when you work an emo hairstyle. It’s okay to express your eccentricity and imagination, but keep in mind if you are employee or student, your style may become cause for concern. Understand that although self expression is widely accepted, there may be certain exceptions in which you'll need to change or tone down your emo look to adhere to corporate and institutional policies.

Mom - Having bangs over the eyes is part of emo hair styles, but you can encourage your son to part his bangs with a bit of hair gel or mousse for different occasions or when it is necessary. Otherwise, he's just experimenting with a new look for himself and trying to find what he likes!

What are options for curly hair? My son has curly and is growing it. Right now the 'bangs' go right over his eyes. It drives me nuts, is there another option for curly styles?
