About the Sanctuary Salon and Day Spa

The Sanctuary Salon and Day Spa is one of the most renowned salons in Orlando and has been repeatedly featured in the media, including being featured as one of the “Most Distinctive Salons & Day Spas in America” by 101 Hairstyles magazine. The spa focuses on a philosophy of harmony as well as beauty and offers more than 150 treatments, including the less painful, more natural threading technique that is a part of that philosophy. Pareen Merchant, co-founder of the salon, has been using the technique since 1981, and she has agreed to share her expertise with LoveToKnow Hair.

The Interview

Where did you first learn eyebrow threading?

As a teenager I was surrounded by people who practiced threading. I picked up the art of threading from my friends and cousins. I started to do it on my friends and neighbors. I never had any serious formal training but I practiced to perfection. It took a couple of years to achieve perfection and speed. When I entered the cosmetology program in India I got more practice in eyebrow arching and speed.

Threading up close.

Please describe the methods you use for threading.

The art of threading originated in the Middle East and South Asia. We use special thread, which is twisted and pulled along the area of unwanted hair. The thread acts like a mini-lasso and lifts the hair follicle directly from the root. The process is very quick and it gives you control to either pick individual hair or a bunch of hair depending on the area. One needs to stretch the skin in that area so the hair can be removed easily.

Why is threading better than waxing or plucking?

It is found by many to be much less painful than waxing. Since threading only targets the individual hairs, skin irritation is kept to a minimum, unlike waxing, which often causes unnecessary stretching and exfoliation of the skin's delicate top layers. Threading is also very precise and allows me to have greater control than waxing, resulting in a better brow shape for you. Threading is 100 percent natural, and even those short stubbly hairs can be removed.

Are there any negative side effects to threading?

There are no side effects of threading.

Can threading work for anyone?

Yes, anybody can try threading including men, women, teenagers, and mature clients.

What unwanted hair can be removed by threading?

Eyebrow threading gives very precise results.

Full face: eyes, upper lip, chin, forehead, and cheeks. You can remove hair from any body part as long as the hair is not very long.

What are the benefits of threading compared to other hair removal methods?

With threading you get perfect shape, quickly and easily, with no or minimal redness. The best part is growth is very slow and soft.

What should an interested client look for to find an experienced "threader"?

A client needs to find out how long the threader has been practicing threading and make sure they don't pinch the skin. It is also important for them to be very good in shaping the brows not just removing the hair.

Losh - You want to be sure your skin is very clean and oil-free before threading, since even a little bit of dirt or oil can irritate sensitive skin. Also, be sure your threader is using all appropriate sanitary precautions during the procedure. You also might consider a bit of cooling lotion after the treatment to reduce the redness.

I just saw eyebrow threading today for the first time! After I saw it being performed, I had the technician perform the technique on me and my husband. Then I came home to look it up on the internet. I have found hands-on courses I can go to, instuctional DVD's to watch, and plenty to read. However, what I cannot determine is that is there a license needed to perform this technique on the public. I am very interested to learn how to perform this technique and possibly start a business in my home town. Only waxing and tweezing are offered to remove unwanted body hair. I am not a cosmetologist. I am a dental hygienist in the state of Texas. Can you tell me if I would need a license?
