About Frederic Fekkai

There's a reason Frederic Fekkai is such a beloved figure in the worlds of beauty and fashion. An industry stalwart for over 20 years, he is responsible for transforming lax locks into magnificent manes, styling the hair of some of the world's most famous celebrities and creating collections of luxurious products for the hair and skin.

The Frenchman was born in Aix-en-Provence and originally dreamed of becoming a sculptor. His focus shifted, though, to the art of shaping tresses, and at the age of 21 he moved to Paris to work at Jacques Dessange, a cutting-edge beauty company. In the hopes of further pursuing his dream, he moved to New York at 25 and helped launch the Bruno Dessange Salon on Madison Avenue. It didn't take long for him to move up the ranks. He impressed the city's elite with his penchant for modern, streamlined cuts and flawless styles, and effectively became the go-to stylist for models and celebrities.

Fekkai Hair Salon

This led to the opening of his flagship salon in 1989, in collaboration with retail giant Bergdorf Goodman. The company sought Fekkai's partnership in response to his great following, and requested a salon that targeted the store's fashionable clientele. Eventually, he moved forward and relocated to an independent spot on 57th Street. The location's prestige was not lost on the salon; it attracted a great deal of attention and became the stylist's landmark salon.

In 2006, the salon relocated to the loft at Henri Bendel, one of the world's most famed shopping establishments. Sitting high above the city (in the heart of Fifth Avenue, no less), the immaculate hair salon is one of the world's largest at 10,000 square feet. Thousands of clients flock to the salon for a brief respite from life's hectic pace. Everything from hair and skin services to makeup and waxing is offered. There are multiple other salons located in different parts of the United States, with additional locations being planned.

If you can't make the trip to one of his salons, indulging in some of Fekkai's products may be the next best thing. The lineup, introduced in 1995, is rich in pampering products for the hair and body. The hair products are grouped into small collections and target various hair types. They include:

Look glamorous!

• Glossing: Ideal for restoring shine to dull hair, these products contain pure olive oil and includes shampoo, conditioner, shine mist and the popular Fekkai glossing cream.
• Technician: This system of products is formulated to protect color-treated hair and includes shampoo, conditioner, color-protective glaze and a three-minute mask.
• Protein Rx: Formulated to repair weak, brittle or broken hair, such as split ends, the products contain a soy and milk protein blend. The collection includes shampoo, conditioner, reparative spray, strengthener, treatment mask and an AM/PM repair kit.
• Full Volume: Limp and fine hair types benefit from this line of shampoo, conditioner, mousse and volume spray, all lightweight and enriched with thickening agents.
• Shea Butter: Extra-dry hair receives intense moisture from this hydrating collection of Frederic Fekkai shea butter moisturizing shampoo , conditioner and hair mask.
• Luscious Curls: Whether natural or permed, curls lose their frizz and gain definition thanks to this lineup of shampoo, conditioner, wave spray and styling cream.
• Fekkai for Men: This lineup of gentleman's grooming products boasts a clean scent and thickening agents. The collection includes shampoo, a light conditioner, grooming clay - and one of the most popular products -- the Frederic Fekkai for men hair gel.

More Products

The vast lineup doesn't end there, though. The stylist also offers products for sensitive scalps, environmentally damaged (or "aged") hair and summer hair. Also included is Coiff, a collection of "hair couture" products that are multifunctional enough to create both polished and undone looks. The Coiff line includes fabulous products to create some of the most modern contemporary styles, such as Fekkai Coiff Controle - a unique straightening balm for leek hair, and Fekkai Coiff Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray for sexy, just-from-the beach looking wavy hairstyles.

Finally, a small but indulgent line of shea butter body products was recently introduced, including the silkening La Creme Luxueuse body lotion.

This beauty icon can add author and actor to his resume, too. The stylist wrote A Year of Style, a guide to easily stylish living, in 2000. He made a cameo appearance in Legally Blonde II and counts Hilary Clinton, Emma Thompson, Sharon Stone, Heidi Klum and Liv Tyler among his A-list clients.
