Defining Very Long Hair

What is considered long hair by one person may not seem long at all to another. Everyone’s hair is unique, and some strands may be naturally weaker or more brittle, making it far more difficult to grow long hair. Generally speaking, however, “long hair” is defined as falling several inches below a woman’s shoulders, while “very long hair” typically falls past the middle of the back. Some women may even have hair past their hips, though these extremely long styles can be difficult to manage and maintain.

Tips for Long Hair

It can take years to grow long hair – on average, hair grows only one-half of an inch per month. To have hair reaching the middle of the back, then, may take four years or more of dedicated growth and meticulous care. Hair does grow faster when it is healthy and well cared for, however, and regular trims are necessary to remove split ends and other damage that can slow or stop hair growth. A healthy hair diet can help provide the necessary protein and nutrients for stellar hair growth as well as the nutrition necessary to keep long hair shiny, strong, and manageable. Adding layers to long hair can make it lighter and add volume, while a partial updo style can help keep very long hair under control.

No More Long Hair

It can be traumatic and emotional to suddenly go from very long hair to a short bob or shag. If you do choose to chop your long locks, however, consider donating hair for cancer victims through an organization such as Locks of Love or other similar charities that provide wigs and hairpieces for individuals in need.
