Gel Twists

From LoveToKnow Hair

Gel twists are a cute curly hair style that is perfect for special occasions. Ladies with unprocessed African American hair can try wearing these twists occasionally, because the curling technique used in creating the curls in natural black hair styles work within the natural texture of your hair. Ladies with processed hair can also wear these types of twists.

Choose gel you like for twists.

How to Create Gel Twists

Gel twists may look complicated, but they can be easy to style.

  1. Wash your hair. Removing all of the oils in your hair and working with clean hair will help the style to last longer and make your curls more defined.
  2. Apply a generous amount of the hair gel of your choice to wet hair. Some ladies opt for alcohol-free gel. Use what works bests for your tastes and your hair texture. Gels with a tighter hold are more likely to give you more defined curls, but these curls may also feel crunchy or feel hard to the touch.
  3. Section of the hair and use two strand twists for black hair to twist each section as tight as you can in two strand twists. The smaller the section of hair that you twist, the more curls you will have. Because you will remove the twists after your hair is dry, make sure that you do not create so many twists that you lose interest in unraveling them.
  4. Get under the dryer. Use a hooded dryer to get your hair completely dry as quickly as possible. You can let your hair dry naturally, but it will take longer for your hair to be prepared for the style.
  5. Unravel the twists. Remove the twists when your hair is completely dry.

Do not comb your gel twists, because combing will cause your hair to frizz. Combing your hair through while it contains hardened gel is also likely to cause hair breakage. Use your fingers to style your hair, instead, carefully separating the twists for fuller curls.

How Long do Gel Curls Last?

Gel curls will last at least a week if you avoid humidity and do not get your hair wet. Your curls may last longer than a week if you have relaxed hair or if your natural hair has a slightly loose curl. If your hair is kinky but you can see a curl pattern in your hair when it is wet, your gel curls may last longer than a week, because your hair will more easily be able to form the curls created by the twists.

Creative Twists

Gel twists in natural, unprocessed African American hair can be created without making two strand twists.

  1. Apply gel to the hair with your hands or use a spray gel, making sure that the hair is saturated with the gel.
  2. Try twisting your wet hair into single twists, similar to candy curls. You may want to use a rattail comb, a comb with a long, skinny handle, for making the twists. To use a rattail comb, wrap your hair around the handle of the comb, candy curl style, sliding the handle of the comb out of the hair when you are done wrapping.
  3. Get under a dryer to set the style.

People who dreadlock their hair use a similar curling method to start dreadlocks, but they do not usually use gel.

Straws and Curls

Have you ever heard of a straw set? A straw set is a method of curling the hair using gel and straws. To use the straw set method, simply wrap the gel-saturated hair around straws that are cut to the length of your hair. Use hair pins to hold the straws in place. Get under the dryer, and when the hair is completely dry, remove the straws.

There are several different methods available for creating twists with gel. You have the luxury of choosing the method that works best for you. Whichever method you use for curling your hair with gel, you can be sure that you will have gorgeous curls and a fun, unique look.
