Hair Coloring Styles
From LoveToKnow Hair
If you are thinking of updating your look, you may want to investigate new hair coloring styles. There are many hair color options available, from subtle to extreme. Whether you want to cover a little gray hair or completely reinvent yourself with a color not found on nature's palette there is a hair coloring style that is right for you.
Hair Color for Curly Hair
Naturally curly hair may appear to be coarse and strong, but it is fragile and requires special care when applying chemicals to it. The first step in achieving a beautiful style for this hair type is trimming off the dead ends, but allowing the natural twists and waves of the hair to remain.
People with curly manes should find a colorist that knows how to paint hair highlights without using foil. This method often causes the color to look like a large blotch as the curls loosen up after drying.
Subtle highlights done in varying shades of the same color can create a natural and dramatic look for people with curly hair. If an overall color change is desired, most colorists recommend avoiding permanent colors. Using semi-permanent or vegetable based dyes is much less likely to leave hair damaged and dull in appearance.
Coloring Styles for Long Hair
Long healthy hair shows off color well. If your long hair is straight to wavy there is little you should not try in the way of color.
One of the most popular colors for long hairstyles is red hair. Red is a bold color, and should be matched to your skin tone. If you want to try out a little red, do some highlights or lowlights shades first before you take the plunge and change your overall color.
For fine blonde hair, using multiple shades can add depth and body. This technique uses a combination of highlights and lowlights for a dramatic color style that enhances straight or styled hair.
Punk Hair Color
There is nothing that makes a bolder statement about style than punk hair colors and styles. Just like all of the other color options, punk hair colors can be subtle or extreme depending on the intensity of the shade and the amount of color coverage you decide to go with.
Whether you wish to add a few strands of color or go with an overall color look, you will need to lighten the hair that is going to receive the color treatment first to get the most impact. Hair will need to be bleached past the point of looking yellow to keep the tone of the color you are applying. If you are only adding sections of color, you can keep the lightened sections separated with foil.
If you color at home, be sure to quickly rinse your tub or sink to prevent staining. If the dye stains your skin, be sure to have some stain remover product on hand such as Jerome Russell's Punk OFF.
Trendy Hair Coloring Styles
Trends for hair color come and go, but some looks are always popular. Dirty blonde is going to be around as a trans-seasonal favorite as a more natural alternative to dark roots and straw blonde.
Platinum blonde paired with the trendy bob hair styles and fringe haircuts has become very popular since Kate Moss wore the look on the cover of the November 2007 cover of iD Magazine.
Red is a perennial favorite for hair color, and the current "it" shade is auburn. The trend seems to be in favor of mixing brown and red to create a natural looking tone.
Finding the Right Hair Color
There are a few things to consider when selecting the right type of hair color and style to fit your personal look and appearance.
People that have warm skin tones should consider colors such as bronze and caramel. Cool skin tones look best when hair is colored with ash browns, copper, and even raven black. For a natural look, keep any highlights and lowlights within 2 or 3 shades of your base color so they aren’t too stark.
Talk to a colorist about different hair coloring styles you may consider to achieve the overall style you are looking for with your haircut and color.
