Hairstyle and Hair Color Ideas

From LoveToKnow Hair

When you're seeking hairstyle and hair color ideas, whether you are craving a color change or need a new hairstyle, there's plenty to consider, including lifestyle, maintenance, and styling commitment.

Versatile Hairstyle and Hair Color Ideas

Not everyone has the budget or the time to spend in their stylist's chair for weekly blowouts or monthly color touch-ups. No matter how great a flattering cut or gorgeous color may be, without proper maintenance and trims, a fab style can quickly turn drab.

Choosing a Hair Style

Choosing a new hairstyle requires honest consideration. Before you run to your stylist with pictures of your favorite celebrity, keep in mind most every celebrity has a pack of stylists coifing their mane for nearly every occasion. Unless you have the time to set your hair everyday and blow dry your layers with round brushes, don't expect to look like a magazine photo when you wake up.

It pays to be realistic when choosing a hair style. What's your hair texture? What's your hair type? Fine hair tends to lack volume, while wavy or curly hair can't wear straight styles without the use of heated styling tools and straightening irons. To find a style that works with your hair type and styling commitment, consider the following:

  • Precision vs. Blended: Precision cuts work great on fine and medium types of hair. Bobs, bowls, and face carving are all techniques and shapes that work great on the client who is willing to maintain their hair cut every 4 to 6 weeks. If you want to keep your look softer and go longer in between stylist visits, you'll want to avoid sharp linear and precision cuts and instead opt for a softer, blended shape.
  • Bangs: Bangs may be a current trend, but remember they require trims to maintain their shape and style. Although bang trims can be performed at home with some practice and tips from your stylist, they are still a moderate commitment that shouldn't be overlooked.
  • Short vs. Long The debate between short vs. long hair is ongoing. Some feel long hair is easier to style because it can be thrown up into ponytails and buns, while others love the idea of a quick shower and shake with short hair. Short hair can be flattering on many face shapes and hair types. The most basic short hair idea is to opt for a graduated bob. Once you're comfortable with styling, the bob can transcend to shorter length or be grown out with ease. Medium length hair is versatile enough to create an abundance of styles, and adding layers can change a look dramatically.

Choosing a Hair Color

Choosing a flattering hair color is a process that requires a lot of thought. For the best outcome, book a free color consultation with a colorist and go over a mental list of what you want and your level of commitment. Nothing is more frustrating to a stylist than a client who craves a certain look, yet doesn't do their part with timely touch-ups and color services. If you want to maintain fresh from the salon color, you'll need to make sure your budget can afford the service based on the colorist's suggestions. In addition to financial considerations, the following play a role in whether or not a hair color flatters your look:

  • Shade Selection: Color selection is pertinent for a flattering hairstyle. The most basic rule of thumb is to keep hair within two levels of its natural shade. If you have light brown hair, feel free to add blonde highlights. If you have dark hair, you can lighten up to a caramel hair color. Natural blondes can go platinum, and red heads can add light blonde chunks of color for a look that is trendy and stylish.
  • Hair Condition: No matter the color, hair should be in great condition to look its best. Color and chemical services can be extremely damaging to the hair. Make sure you use deep conditioners and book regular trims to keep hair healthy. Heat protection products are a mandate for those who use styling tools such as blow dryers, straightening irons and hot rollers.
  • Lifestyle: Professional and casual lifestyles require different looks. What works in a creative, artistic occupation may not transcend to a conservative office. Make sure your hair color fits in with your environment by considering the appearance of those around you. Funky hair colors and techniques may not work for your lifestyle, regardless of how on trend they are. If you want playful color but need to keep the look serious, why not go for a solid and vibrant allover hair color?

No matter your hair type, color or length, there are plenty of hairstyle and hair color ideas you can consider. For the best results, keep an open-mind when discussing options with your stylist, and make sure you can commit to the change..

Katina - Many colorists will do both highlights and lowlights at the same time, but it may be more expensive. Before any coloring treatment, it is best to be sure your hair is as healthy as possible - deep conditioning is a must, and eat a diet for healthy hair for several weeks beforehand to be sure your hair is in great condition to withstand a heavy coloring treatment.

Can Highlights and Lowlights be done at the same time?? Should heavy duty conditioning be done before treatment?? Thanks !
