Long Hair Prom Styles

From LoveToKnow Hair

If you have long hair, you probably wear a lot of pretty, practical ponytails or other easy styles, but for a special event you may want to consider long hair prom styles that are elegant and romantic. Some styles you can do yourself, others will need a professional’s care and skill, but all will be fabulous. However, if you are not going to have your hair styled in a salon, you should practice your style several times before the big event, no matter how simple it is.

Waves add soft romance to a simple long style.

Types of Long Hair Prom Styles

Regardless of whether your hair is curly or straight, there are many different, beautiful looks you can create for this special night.

Curly Styles

One of the most popular styles to wear long hair for an evening out is with flirty curls, whether they come naturally to your hair or not.

Partially Pinned Up Ringlets

For hair that is naturally curly, partially pinned up ringlets is a timeless, beautiful look that shows off your hair to a nice advantage. You want to sweep your hair back from your face and have some of it in an updo, while the rest cascades down the side of your face and your back. It’s best to wash your hair the day before you want to style it, otherwise it will be too slippery. If your curls vary a lot in tightness, set some in curlers to create a more even look.

Gather your hair to form a half-ponytail at the top of your head, lay a finger below its base, and fold the hair up and over your finger, creating a loop. Hold this in place (you may need a friend to help). Pin the loop securely at the top and bottom. Your curls should now be higher at the back of your head, with a cascade falling down your back. The remaining hair you can either leave loose or continue to gather under the loop, controlling the amount of hair falling and where it lands. Finish with mousse or hair spray to keep in place and decorate to match your outfit.

Creating Curls

If your hair isn’t naturally curly, you can still have curls using any kind of roller. It may be easiest to use hot rollers as these are fast and don’t require sleeping in or extra drying. For long, loose curls, use large rollers and follow the instructions for your hair type. What you want is hair that is silky and smooth from the crown to the neck with some light waves, which gradually fall into bouncy, romantic curls. You will want to use a good product to control frizz, but be mindful that it isn’t also a straightener, as this will defeat the purpose. It may help to give yourself a hot oil treatment the night before so that your hair will be silky and stand up to the heat of the rollers, which can be damaging.

Straight Styles

Floral Hair Pins

A good ceramic hair straightener will turn your wavy or frizzy hair into a vision of silky softness. You can go retro and try a seventies hairstyle with a part down the middle and small chunks of hair pulled back from the temples to the crown. Or, you can go medieval and add some long braids with ribbons woven in to match your dress.

Combined Styles

Experiment with wearing most of your hair slightly wavy, but pulling the top of the hair into a curly updo. This style is best unadorned, because it has so much going on.

Classic Long Hair Styles

When in doubt, there’s nothing like a French braid or two to give you simple, chic elegance. Far from boring, you can weave in ribbons – maybe with some sparkle in them – and add flowers. Braids are a great way to wear your hair long and shiny, but also keep it off your neck as you dance the night away.

No matter what style you go with, be sure to bring along some extra product to help maintain your lovely locks all night.
