What is Medium Length Hair?

There is no single definition for medium lengths, though most stylists agree that hair that ranges from the bottom of the ear to just below the collar or shoulders can be classified as medium length. Short hair is typically above the ear or arranged in a series of very short layers, though none extends from the crown of the head to lower than the ear. Long hair, then, is generally lower than the shoulders. Hair length definitions for men are different: medium hair for men is any style that reaches from the crown to the top of the ear, while styles longer than that are generally classified as long hair and buzz styles are obviously short.

To someone used to shorter styles, “medium” may seem very long indeed, while an individual who has always had very long hair may consider a typical medium length to be exceedingly short. A rough estimate for medium hair is this: if the hair cannot be successfully pulled into a ponytail, it is short, while if it catches when you lean back in a chair, it is long. Lengths between those two extremes can all be considered medium.

Benefits of Medium Hair

Medium hair is arguably the most versatile length – very long hair may be difficult to style, limp, or take more maintenance, while very short hair is quick and easy but lacks many style options. Medium hair combines the best of both extremes: it is generally fast to style and there are a wide range of style options suitable for the length. At the same time, minor adjustments to the length – a deeper than normal trim or a longer period between cuts – can quickly result in a longer or shorter style without drastic changes.

Potential Problems

At the same time, medium hair can be problematic, depending on the specific style. Layers may add volume and texture, but it is important to remember that the hidden layers beneath the hair are far shorter than those on top, and the hair will not be able to be easily styled into updos or pulled-back looks. Medium lengths can be troublesome to grow out if they have been styled with layers, and naturally unruly hair may be more difficult to style with a medium length than if it had the weight of longer locks or the structure of a short style to keep it under control.

There are many styles suitable for medium hair. In fact, medium lengths are often the most versatile of any, and can be stylishly coifed as bobs, updos, with layers or bangs, braided, or curled. Texture and depth can be added with highlights or lowlights, and medium hair can be worn with a number of beautiful and functional accessories. When choosing a medium style, however, there are more important considerations than just the hair length, such as:

  • Is the style suitable to your face shape? Medium hair can be layered or tapered to accent different facial features and blend with any face shape.
  • Can you maintain the style? Elaborate styles may take hours to perfect and may require extensive use of products and chemicals to look their best.
  • Is the style right for your hair texture? Very damaged hair may look scruffy with a medium length, while layers or bangs may be necessary to add volume to fine hair.

Once you’ve decided to choose a medium hair style, you should learn how to best care for medium length hair in order to keep the style looking its best.

Caring For Medium Lengths

Because medium length hair generally frames the face, the style is often more noticeable than with other lengths, and therefore it must be cared for properly to look its best. Regular trims (every 5-6 weeks) are necessary, and may be needed more frequently for styles incorporating a lot of layers. The ends of the hair should be carefully conditioned to keep them healthy, and any split ends should be trimmed away as soon as possible to avoid a frizzy look. Despite the versatility of the style, changing styles frequently is not recommended because it will put excessive stress on the hair and could lead to breakage or hair loss.

Medium length hair is beautiful, versatile, and suitable for nearly everyone. With careful consideration of the precise length, style, and how to keep it looking its best, medium hair can be a great look.

Matthew - Getting the cut wrong can be a quick way to ruin your relationship, so I'd suggest trying to go to a salon instead. A professional stylist will better understand the look your girlfriend wants and can adapt it to suit her hair texture, length, and face shape. Be sure to take along some pictures if they are available, and remember to tell her how gorgeous her new look is!
