How did you get your start with men's hairstyling, and what makes this avenue unique and challenging?

I started to cut mostly men's hair when I became a stylist at Rudy's barber shop on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. At first it was intimidating because I was generally trained in woman's styles and men's hair is exceedingly different. When you only have an inch or two of hair to cut there's a lot less room to make mistakes and a clipper cut is a unique art form.

What was the inspiration behind the name and the establishment of The Hive?

If you look up the definition of a 'hive' you'll find it’s a place where many congregate and actively create. This is what we are busy doing at The Hive Los Angeles. Whether it’s design, paint, photography, or in most cases cutting hair, it always involves creation and we gather people in our space to enjoy all of these elements.

Do you think men's modern hairstyles have changed over the years?

Men's styles have changed and are always changing to some degree. Right now I really think anything goes if it’s flattering. Men can wear anything from a mullet to a nicely kept military cut, as long as it shows off their personality.

What's a versatile hairstyle that most every man can wear?

A simple short cut on the sides and double the length on top. A nice clean perimeter and a choppy interior allows this style to be messy or with the right product and instruction, lay down into a nice classic style.

What are some trends in men's modern hairstyles?

Taking any style from the past 100 years and integrating it with a modern personalized cut.

Do you have any suggestions for medium to long styles that work for men in the corporate environment?

Men can have modern looks.

A medium to long men’s cut can be easily transformed into a polished style by combing a glossy paste into the hair when it's wet. It will sit well and walks the line between “hip” and “corporate.”

Name your favorite styling product that can help men achieve a fresh look.

The best product for a fresh clean look is a matte hair paste. Davines invisible paste works marvelously! Work the paste into the palm of your hand and evenly into the hair. This compliments any great style without it looking overloaded with product.
