Paul Mitchell Products

From LoveToKnow Hair

Paul Mitchell Products is a full line of quality hair products sold exclusively through salons. The company sells products designed by hairdressers for hairdressers. Paul Mitchell was founded in 1979 with a great idea and a meager budget and has thrived over the years. Today, Paul Mitchell offers 90 products in 45 countries, and reported $700 million in sales in 2005.

Company History

Paul Mitchell Products was founded in 1979, the brainchild of two men, John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell. The company took Mr. Mitchell's name since he was a hairdresser and they felt his name would lend credibility to their products among salon owners. The initial funds were so limited that the trademark black and white packaging was not a result of clever marketing...it was all they could afford at the time.

The duo sold their products through free demonstrations for salon personnel. They also guaranteed the salon owners that if they didn't sell the Paul Mitchell products, they could return them for a full refund. This hands-on strategy led to Paul Mitchell being one of the fastest growing privately-held companies of the 1980s. Tragically, Paul Mitchell died of cancer in 1989.

Today, Paul Mitchell sells through 25 U.S. distributors to 90,000 U.S. salons. In addition, the company is represented in 45 countries all around the globe. John Paul continues to lead the company. He has turned down several lucrative buy-out offers, stating that he wishes to remain true to the original vision of selling exclusively through salons.
