What Are Pixie Braids?

Pixie braids are a style with a myriad of tiny braids covering the majority or all of the head. Commonly worn by African-American children, this hairdo has crossed over culturally and through generations. Today you will see teens and middle-aged women sport this fun 'do no matter what their nationality or hair habits.

Pixie braids, also call micro braids, are especially popular on shoulder to mid-length hair, as you need a substantial amount to pull off a multitude of braids. Your hair is then divided into very small sections and braided tightly. Some people remove their pixie braids at bedtime, while others prefer to leave them in their hair for extended periods, shampooing their hair with the style still in.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this has never been truer than when it comes to braided hair tricks. To achieve a professional looking pixie look without spending money at a salon, it is great to look at pictures for your inspiration. Doing a Google image search can give you lots of ideas as to how pixie braids are worn. Finding someone with your similar hair type or skin tone can make a big difference, guiding you in the right direction when it comes to such a style.

Eternal Youth

The pixie braid look is derived from a popular African-American childhood hairdo, and its carefree demeanor is critical. The actual braids should be small, and they can be layered to different lengths if you want to add some fun face framing to the final result.

Braids must be extremely tight in order to achieve the "curve" that is signature of this style. Your hair should feel breezy and layered upon completion. Some add color to selected braids to add dimension and a slightly wild streak to the look. African-American women love to add streaks of red, and this can be flattering in a fun way that is still professional enough for the office. Color can also be added through beads or weaving colored thread into the style.

Getting Back to Normal

If you choose to have your natural hair in pixie braids for an extended period of time, you may incur hair damage. While this is always a factor with pixie braids, you can help reduce the pain your hair endures by smartly removing the braids when you are done with them.

Reserve enough time to get the job done right. If your braids were professionally done or you have a weave, it is best to return to the salon for removal. However, if you have done the braids yourself, allow at least an hour to guide your hair back to its natural state.

Loosen the braids one at a time and carefully separate them from the rest of your hair to avoid tangles. After removing the braids, comb through your hair to smooth the kinks left behind. Next, wash your hair as normal but use a conditioner for dry hair. Lastly, use a leave-in conditioner. Focus specifically on the roots and ends of your hair, which have endured the most trauma during the process. Get your hair trimmed at a salon to remove any dead ends, and you will be back to your vibrantly natural self!

Pixie braids pictures can be fun to look at and glean ideas from. Use this look for a vacation, special event, or just to feel young again.
