Shaving Cream

From LoveToKnow Hair

Whether you’re shaving your face, legs, head, or under your arms, shaving cream is a necessary tool for a smooth, close shave that is gentle on skin. There are many different types of creams, however, and they should be used properly for the best results.

Shave smoothly with the right cream.

About Shaving Cream

Originally created decades ago, shaving foam or cream is still one of the most popular shaving-related accessories on the market. The foam, composed of different pressurized chemicals, expands rapidly when released and helps soften, moisturize, and soothe both skin and hair prior to shaving as well as provides lasting effects after shaving. Because of its unique properties and density, the cream stays in place well and is not runny or thin, making it convenient for users who need to take more time for a clean shave.

A limited variety of non-aerosol creams are available, often referred to as shaving lotions or gels. They provide the same moisturizing and softening effects as creams. Different formulas of all shaving products are manufactured for sensitive skin or for different hair textures, and a variety of scents are available including citrus and aloe-based products. Because the majority of cream users are men, flower and fruit scents are far less common, though shaving gels typically have a wider range of aesthetic choices.

Because of the chemicals used in shaving cream and how its volume drastically expands, it is not recommended for use on eyebrows or other extremely sensitive areas.

Tips for Using Cream

For the best results, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using cream. For the smoothest, easiest shave…

Proper application makes using cream more effective.
  • Wash area to be shaved thoroughly before applying cream. Different formulas may work best on wet or dry skin; check the label for recommendations.
  • Hold bottle upright to dispense cream either into your hand or directly on the area to be shaved. Wait several seconds for cream to expand before spreading.
  • Coat desired area with a consistent layer of cream – thick enough to cover hair but not so thick to be an obstacle to the razor.
  • Use short, smooth strokes for an even shave.
  • Rinse razor frequently during shaving to remove excess cream, hair, and other debris that could clog pores and irritate skin.
  • After shaving, rinse off remaining cream and use aftershave or additional moisturizing lotion if desired.
  • Always store bottle in a cool place to prevent excess pressure, and keep out of reach of children.

Cream, Gel, or Lotion?

With so many different shaving products available, it can be difficult to decide which to use. The basic differences between products are:

  • Shaving Cream: Dispensed from a pressurized can, cream or foam is more commonly used by men and is typically the least expensive option.
  • Shaving Gel: Available in a wider range of fragrances, gel is slightly runnier than cream and does not foam as much, but still provides good coverage.
  • Shaving Lotion: Thicker than gel or cream but without the foaming volume, lotion often provides greater moisturizing benefits than other products.

Choosing which product to use while shaving is a matter of personal preference, convenience, and skin care needs.

Do I Have to Use Shaving Cream?

Whether or not to use shaving products is an individual choice. While they do provide benefits such as making the task easier and less damaging to skin, people with extremely sensitive skin may not be able to tolerate the chemicals that cause cream to foam so generously. Other people prefer to stick with simple soap and water, and there are razors (both women’s manual razors and men’s electric shavers that have lotion or cream built in. Individuals with very dry skin, coarse hair, or hard-to-shave hair that grows in several directions may find greater benefits to using shaving lotions and creams, however, since these products are designed specifically to make shaving easier.

Shaving cream is a vital accessory for most people to achieve a smooth, close shave with little irritation or other side effects. With a wide range of consistencies and fragrances available, it is possible to find a cream to suit any preferences and skin care needs.
