Shaving Tips for Women
From LoveToKnow Hair
Shaving tips for women include how to get the softest, smoothest shave without irritating the skin.
Basic Shaving Tips for Women
There are a few basic tips that cover shaving in general, no matter whether you're shaving your legs, underarms, or bikini area. Others are more specific to one or two areas.
Prepping the Skin
- Use conditioner instead of shave gel. You can buy cheap conditioner at the drugstore and potentially save money while moisturizing rather than buying shaving gel or cream that can dry out your skin. If you don't like the feel of conditioner on your skin and you prefer the feel of a gel or a cream, you can buy one that's marketed for men. Sometimes they're less expensive, but they're essentially the same product aside from the available scents.
- Use hot or warm water to soften the hair before shaving. Don't just hop into the shower and start the razor across your skin. Give it some time. This is a good opportunity to go ahead and shower first. You should always shave clean skin, anyway. This helps to prevent infection if you do nick the skin with the blade.
- Make sure your razor isn't dull. A dull blade will not only prevent you from getting a close shave, but you'll also wind up with more cuts than you would have otherwise. You're shaving those legs to show them off, so don't give yourself a reason to cover them up again—with bandages! A trick to getting your razors to last longer: exfoliate first. While shaving will exfoliate for you, the dead skin cells can also clog up—and dull--your razor.
- When shaving your bikini line, trim first. Then shave downward. Shift direction slightly and go at a diagonal, still downward to avoid ingrown hair. Once you're done, dry off and apply a lotion designed for sensitive skin.
- Splurge on a razor. You don't need the most expensive models, but some of the razors you can buy in bulk at any drugstore tend to cause more nicks and razor burns and give a less perfect shave than razors with multiple blades designed for women. In some cases you may find that you prefer one designed for men, so don't neglect to try one or two of those if you're having trouble selecting your razor. It may take you a while to find the perfect razor for you. Don't be afraid to experiment so you'll know when you've found the best razor for your needs.
The Shave
- Shave against the hair growth for the closest shave. For legs, for example, shave from the ankle up to the knee. You may find that you need to shift the direction of the razor on your thighs as the hair pattern is a little less predictable. Underarm hair also grows in multiple directions, so don't just shave in an up and down motion. You'll need to make diagonal strokes, shave from bottom to top, and so on, to get all of those pesky little hairs.
- If your skin is especially sensitive or you're prone to ingrown hairs, you can shave in the direction of hair growth, but the result won't be as smooth.
After You Shave
- Moisturize legs, underarms, and the bikini area after shaving. You can use your favorite lotion or oil. This is especially important for legs as they tend to be one of the driest parts of the body.
- For an instant burst of color on your legs, you can mix a liquid or gel bronzer in with your lotion. Just be sure it's dry before you get dressed, and check the likelihood of rub-off from your mixture of choice with your hand before leaving the house.
The Bottom Line
While some women will always prefer waxing, the right shaving tips for women can give you a quick way to get smooth legs, underarms, and bikini lines. There is no growing out period involved to get an effective shave and with the right prep work, razor, and moisturization afterwards, you can get silky skin with no hint of stubble or irritation.
