Your fine-haired friends may envy you, but you know that if you’re tired of wearing your hair long, it’s hard to find perfect short hairstyles for thick wavy hair. The wrong cut can make your hair look like a steel wool scrub pad, or give you permanent frizzies till it grows out. Fortunately, there are some cute options out there, and great hair products will help you bring out the best in your new look.

Short Hairstyles for Thick Wavy Hair

If you’ve always worn your thick wavy hair long, you may be surprised to find that a shorter cut will turn your waves to curls. Back in the 1920s, when short hair worn in curls or waves was all the rage, a number of women had their hip-length hair bobbed and discovered they had natural curls or waves, which made setting their hair much easier.

Retro girls who admire the look of the Marcel wave can create the same look without resorting to fussy hot irons and lots of heavy hair gel. That’s not to say it’s the easiest look to achieve, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not so tough. You work with your natural wave to tease a more structured look starting at the crown of the head. This must be done with wet hair and a fine-tooth comb. For detailed modern instructions, look at Nocturne’s section on vintage hair styles.

For a more current look, layers are the way to go. Thick wavy hair cut short without layers can give you triangle-head. Layering will texturize the hair, giving it depth and volume. It will also allow you to play with the look. You can twist it back with sparkly pins for an elegant look, or wear it sexily tousled with some shine, creating a perfect style day or night.

The All-Important Cut

First and foremost, if you’re going short, you need an excellent cut for thick hair. It doesn’t matter how good you are at styling your hair, without a good cut to start with, you’re not going to be happy. You can scout cheaper products and hair accessories, but this is one area where you should go ahead and spend some real money if you’re making a radical change. Get a recommendation for a good hairdresser who is experienced in creating short hairstyles for thick wavy hair. It will help to bring in photographs of what you’re hoping to replicate, and take your time talking with the stylist before any scissors come out.

Someone who understands your hair will be able to advise you as to what will work and what your various options are. Don’t be shy about asking a lot of questions! You’re a paying customer and you’re the one who’s going to have to live with the look, so you want to be sure you and the stylist are on the same page. Of course, whatever they do in the salon will never look quite the same as what you do at home, but if they do something you really like, ask them to walk you through it so you can either come close, or maybe even do it better!

Style Maintenance

Maintaining a short hairstyle for thick wavy hair is almost all about the products. It’s the rare head that can go product-free. To control frizz, first, ease up on brushing. Too much brushing can actually create frizz because it can break strands and create uneven areas. Try not to shampoo too frequently. Instead, use more conditioner, being sure to coat your hair to the ends. It’s also helpful to deep condition your hair once a week. Shop around for a mousse or gel that you like. Your stylist will be able to advise you as well. The main thing is to steer clear of any product that has alcohol in it, as this will promote dryness and therefore frizz.

Short hairstyles for thick wavy hair can look both sassy and romantic, so don’t be afraid to play!

Martha - You may want to get your hair trimmed out more evenly so that it can grow more evenly. Bob hair styles or shags are great looks that can work wonders with short hair. Enjoy!

Kay - If you're growing out your layers, it can be difficult to find a lot of different looks. You might check out a longer shag or go shorter to help even out your layers. Bobs or tapered styles can be very attractive.
