The Myths of Laser Hair Removal
From LoveToKnow Hair
Since laser hair removal is such a popular but misunderstood procedure, there are several myths that have come up on the subject.
The Most Common Myths
The most common misconceptions about laser hair removal are:
- It doesn’t work on certain skin colors.
- It hurts.
- It’s expensive.
These myths may have been true in the past when the procedure was new but this just isn't the case anymore. Advances in technology as well as a better understanding of how hair grows and how to inhibit that growth have allowed experienced technicians to create better procedures to suit nearly every skin type, and as the procedures grow more popular, many clients are discovering the true value of this type of hair removal procedure.
Debunking the Myths of Laser Hair Removal
Skin Color
Laser hair removal works on all skin colors, light or dark. One of the most advanced lasers in the hair removal industry is the Lumenis laser. They deliver beams at pinpoint accuracy that targets only the hair follicles. It will not touch the surrounding skin so it doesn't matter what color your skin is for the procedure to work correctly. Some lasers do operate by targeting contrasting colors, however, so the darker the contrast between the hair and skin, the more effective the treatment may be. This can make sessions shorter or result in fewer sessions for complete removal.
Pain
Laser hair removal usually does not hurt. The newest lasers have a cooling tip. This tip will blow cool air onto the skin as it works (usually a fraction of a second before the laser pulse) in order to keep the skin free of irritation during the procedure. After the procedure there may be some redness or slight irritation but normal activities can be resumed right after hair removal. Redness typically fades in a very short period of time, depending on the skin's sensitivity.
Cost
Laser removal may sound a little expensive but when you think of the savings you will make in the long run, you will see that it can be worth it. Since laser hair removal is actually a permanent hair removal procedure, you will never have to buy electric shavers, shaving cream, waxing and electrolysis treatments, or other treatments and products. That is a lot of money on treatments and products for a whole lifetime and adds up to quite a bit more than the cost of laser hair removal. Many medial spas also offer packages that can save you a lot of money as well. A full body laser hair removal would be much cheaper than buying hair removal for each area separately, and referral bonuses, paid-in-full discounts, and convenient payment plans are available.
The myths of laser hair removal may be intimidating, but as the technology progresses, those myths become more and more obsolete.

Comments
Umm - Yes, laser treatments can scar if you don't treat your skin properly. It is critical not to get a tan or sunburn while undergoing laser treatments -- always wear heavy sunscreen and stay out of the sun as much as possible and it won't be a problem. Other factors, such as medications, wearing makeup or other products during a treatment, and your personal skin type can also contribute to potential scarring, but an initial consultation (often done for free) will help determine if laser treatment is right for you.
