Two Strand Twist Technique
From LoveToKnow Hair
The two strand twist technique is a popular rope-like braid style that is perfect for elegant and formal black hair updos. Even better, this braid technique is fairly easy to learn and master at home.
Two Strand Twist Technique
Unlike tight braids, twists are created using just two thick sections of hair. Twisting is much easier than braiding, since there's no struggle with a third section when you're working with just two hands.
The two strand twist technique is also known as the Senegalese twist. The look is very comparable to dreadlocks, without the high commitment and maintenance. While this style can be worn by both men and women for nearly any occasion, it is also a perfect quick updo that is both classic, yet simple. Once the hair is twisted, it has endless versatility! Twists can be a very urban hairstyle when paired with headscarves and bold jewelry, or they can be swept up with rhinestone clips for a feminine wedding style. Men can wear the two strand twists will bandanas and ball caps. In addition, the two twist looks great all on its own. Unlike braids, twists tend to stay shiny and moist, so the damage and aftercare of the hair is minimal. To create this unique twist, follow these step by step instructions.
- Cleanse and Condition: Shampoo and condition hair. Towel dry and blot excess moisture from the hair. Hair should be as dry as possible to avoid breakage and stretching.
- Part Horizontally: With a pointed rattail comb, create a horizontal part right above the nape of the neck.
- Part Vertically: Next, part the horizontal section into a vertical section, starting on the left side of the section.
- Clip: Once you've created a square vertical section, clip away the remaining hair so that you can focus on the single section.
- Mist: Lightly mist the vertical section with water. Work a pomade or wax into the section from scalp to ends.
- Divide: Next, divide the section into two parts.
- Twist: Finally, create your twists! Simply place on section over the other. Right to left, left to right, and so forth until you reach the bottom of the hair.
- Continue Until Complete: Continue sectioning and twisting the hair until the entire head is complete.
- Add Shine: Once twists are intact, spray with a shine spray to add sheen and softness.
Additional Styles for Two Strand Twists
While the most feminine two strand twists are kept very small and tight, large sections lend a Rasta-like flair to the hair. You can keep your twists intact for a day or up to a couple of weeks depending on your styling needs. Once the twists are unraveled, the hair will have a very wavy and tightly coiled texture that looks great for several days. If you intend to leave the twists in place for a few weeks, make sure you rinse and condition the scalp frequently to remove odor and eliminate itch.
While there are plenty of braid styles that are unique and funky, the two strand twist technique is a popular choice because it is easy to create and offers a multitude of looks. If you're in a braid rut, why not opt for these playful twists instead?
