Types of Bangs Hair

From LoveToKnow Hair

With bangs back in a big way, discover the types of bangs hair looks best in.

Sultry side swept bangs

Snip it. Shag it. Fringe it. Sweep it. No matter how you wear it, the bang is just plain hot! Everyone can wear bangs, and the perks of a banged hairstyle are many. Bangs seek no commitment, they offer plenty of drama and sex appeal, and they modernize even the most basic haircut. The trickiest part of wearing bangs is choosing the types of bangs hairstyles can have. Fear not! Whether in salon or armed with scissors in the comforts of your own home, this guide will help you find the perfect bang for your face shape and hair type within minutes.

Types of Bangs Hair Styles

Cropped Bangs

Pulp Fiction anyone? Uma Thurman rocked the cropped bang in Pulp Fiction, and Angelina Joile had many gals running for scissors in Girl Interrupted. The cropped bang is edgy and modern and is usually less than 1” in length. Slightly rocker and halfway pixie, the cropped bang works best on short, round faces with straight hair. The cropped bang is not recommended for curly or wavy hair types.

Classic Bangs

The classic bang is perfect and flattering on most everyone. The length of the classic bang varies depending on the face shape. Long faces should wear a classic bang at or below the eyebrow; short faces should aim for a bang slightly at or above the eyebrow to lengthen face shape. The classic bang looks youthful and fresh and hides the small brow lines that accompany age.

Side Swept Bangs

The side swept bang is the perfect recommendation if you want a bang without commitment. Slightly asymmetrical, the side swept bang can be pushed to either side of the forehead or straight down the middle. The side swept bang adds the bonus of creating visual illusions and balancing facial features. If you have a crooked nose, ask your stylist to snip the bang shorter on the opposite side of the tilt to correct it visually. You’d be surprised at all the options a side bang affords, and the instant drama is well worth the snip!

Baby Bangs

The baby bang is a beauty don’t. We’ve all seen them, some of us have worn them, and the truth is, they look good on no one. Avoid the thin, stringy section of barely there baby bangs. Either commit to bangs or don’t, but please put the baby bang to rest, once and for all.

How to Trim Bangs at Home

Technique

Once you’ve determined the ideal length and style that you’d like to implement on your face shape, it’s time to start cutting! You’ll need the following supplies to snip away…

Supplies:

  1. Mirror
  2. Comb
  3. Short haircutting scissors

Tip before you get started: Invest in a small pair of sharp scissors; you’ll have more control with a smaller pair vs. long pair of scissors. Remember, only cut bangs when they’re dry, and try to have your hair styled the way you will normally wear it.

  1. Looking into a mirror, section off bangs as thick or as thin as desired and comb straight down.
  2. Take a small piece of hair from the center of your forehead, only if the nose is straight. If you are creating a side swept bang or the nose is tilted, start at the peak of the eyebrow.
  3. Look in the mirror; grab a few strands of hair firmly between thumb and forefinger, point scissors downward and snip to desired length. Remember, raise the bang above the eyebrow to lengthen the nose and face shape, to minimize length snip just below the eyebrow. If working with a tilt, the hair should be longer on the opposite side of the tilt.
  4. Repeat, taking only a few hairs at a time. Work towards the outer brow, gradually allowing the hair to get slightly longer, snipping in an arched manner.
  5. Cut the opposite side a small piece at a time, again graduating slightly in an arched manner, until you reach the end of the eyebrow.
  6. Blow out bangs with a hairdryer or give your head a good shake, cut any remaining stray hairs.

Change is Good

Every girl craves a little excitement now and then. Bangs add drama, mystery and a modern edge to any hairstyle. Consider bangs if you need a new look without commitment. Here today, grown out tomorrow, what could be better than that?
