Updo Styles
From LoveToKnow Hair
Whether you want to dress up your look for a special occasion or just desire a different style, experiment with some updo styles. Medium length to long hair can be swept up in a variety of hair updos suitable for any occasion. While some dressed up looks are quite elaborate, many are simple to do yourself. The only hard part is deciding which updo style is your personal favorite!
Choosing Hair Updo Styles
When you put your hair up, the options are nearly infinite. So, it is important to decide what kind of look you would like. You can have a stern and sleek style when you put your hair up or a romantic look with dangling wisps. A messy updo works well for casual days while a tower of ringlets is more appropriate for a formal event. Think about the occasion for which you are choosing your hair updo. Your wedding? Your hair should be all about romance, and it needs to work with your veil or headpiece. Looking for a prom hairstyle? You can go with almost any style updo as long as it makes you look fabulous!
Other things to think about when you choose your hair style is the outfit you will wear on your special occasion. A dramatic dress deserves stunning hair and a romantic gown will need a softer look. A tailored outfit needs a sleeker hair design than a flouncy dress.
Your hair texture will determine which updo looks will be most suitable for you; if you can work with your hair instead of fighting its natural preferences, you will be more successful with your ultimate style. For example, coarse curly hair is not suited for a sleek look with wisps; instead choose a look that takes advantage of your ringlets.
You should also take your face shape into account when picking an updo for your hair. If you have an oblong face, avoid looks that add too much height since it will exaggerate the length. Have a round face? Go for some height or leave some long strands framing your face to keep it from looking too wide.
Types of Updo Styles
While the variations you can create with your hair are endless, there are some classic updo hair styles you can use as a basis for your special look.
French Twist
A French twist starts with all of the hair pulled sleekly back into a hand-held ponytail at the back of the head. Slide your hand out so that the ponytail is held loosely a couple inches from the scalp and twist the hair. Fold it to one side, securing it with pins and tucking the end under the twist.
Bun
To make a bun, hair should first be pulled into a ponytail at the back of the head. It can be low, near the nape of the neck, or high on the head. Once the ponytail is formed and secured with an elastic or silicon band, twist the hair sleekly. Then, wrap it around the base of the ponytail and use hair pins or bobby pins to secure it into place.
Curls Updo
There are several styles that involve piles of curls at the top of the head. You can gather the hair with a ponytail or use an elasticized comb to pull your hair up and away from your face. Then, use a curling iron to make ringlets that you can arrange in fun styles.
Braids
Sometimes braids are the updo, and other times they are used as elements in an updo. A simple French braid is always an elegant choice. Other fun options use braids to wrap around the rest of the hair in an updo or to pull pieces of hair back from the face, before it is gathered into a bun or curl updo. You can also take a ponytail and form it into multiple braids; this is a fun look for younger girls.
Updo Tips
If you are planning to wear your hair up for a special occasion, make sure you practice the style ahead of time. In addition to putting your hair up and ensuring you have all the right accessories, wear the updo to make sure it holds. You don't want your hair to fall down on your big day.
Feeling less than confident in your updo skills? Most hair stylists are experts at updo styles. When you make your appointment, make sure you tell the salon what you want, and about your occasion. If you have particular accessories in mind – for example flowers, sparkly pins, or combs – take them with you so that your stylist can incorporate them into your hairstyle.
