Updos for Long Hair

From LoveToKnow Hair

There are more updos for long hair than any other length, which isn’t surprising. Long hair can be difficult to maintain, but it allows flexibility in styling that medium and short hair just can’t match. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll soon find there’s nothing you can’t do.

Long hair lends itself to a variety of updo styles.

Simple Updos for Long Hair

If you’ve had long hair for a while, you’re probably already pretty good at putting it up and know a few basic hair styles that consistently work well for you, even on your worst hair day.

Buns

One of the easiest fixes for putting up long hair when nothing else is working, or when you’re just in a hurry, is a classic bun. Old-fashioned and yet always in style, the bun can be worn in a variety of ways, depending on what look you’re trying to project. And if you’re not confident about creating a bun that will stay in place, start with the long-haired girl’s absolute best friend, the ponytail. Simply wind the pony around its holder and then secure it with a few long clips or bobby pins and there you have it – a nice little bun.

French Twists

The classic French twist is also a simple and elegant updo that looks wonderful if you have long hair. It’s essentially the same look as described above, only you twist the ponytail as you wind it around, and then tuck the end underneath the twist, securing it with pins. If you want to glam this up a bit, you can pull out some strands or chunks near the front and curl them, creating a frame for your face.

Romantic Updos for Long Hair

There’s a reason all those pre-Raphaelite paintings feature women with their hair hanging long and only partially bound up – lightly styled long hair has always been considered beautiful and sensual. You can sweep your hair up and still have a lot left over for everyone to admire.

Curls and Half-dos

For a truly romantic look, consider curling your hair if it isn’t naturally curly. Curls add softness and bounce. From here, any variety of full or half updo will be striking.

Simple and Sleek

One option is to gather your hair from the sides and back, as though you were making a half ponytail, and secure it below the base, then effectively fold the hair over the base, so as to make a loop, which you then pin at the top and bottom. The curls will now sit high at the back of your head, blending in with the rest, which are cascading down your back.

You can also use this same technique to gather up all your hair and leave only a few strategic long curls framing your face.

Edwardian Updo

An Edwardian updo takes some time to learn, but combines softness and sophistication when mastered. Create this look by twisting chunks of hair down the head, starting from the temples. Add more hair as you go, as though you were making a French braid. Gather all the twists at the nape of the neck and secure them with pins, preferably jeweled.

Braided Updo

Braid hair styles can also contribute to a romantic updo. A simple but striking style, mixing romance and elegance, is to braid your hair in a number of micro braids and then twist them together before winding them all around the top of your head.

Finishing Touches

Hair accessories are also a simple way to add interest to any updos for long hair. Flowers, jewels, wooden barrettes and vintage combs can all be used both to keep a hair style in place and give it more flair. Even a ponytail can be dressed up just by tying a ribbon or scarf around it. Keep an eye out for items that can turn a simple style into something special.
