Urban Black Hair Styles

From LoveToKnow Hair

Urban black hairstyles are creative and funky. Curls, color and a little sparkle are typical characteristics of hairstyles that you'd find on city streets. Updos with curls are one of the more popular styles. These updos are sleek and polished, and may have ringlets in the updo or surrounding the crown. Texture is a key component in urban hair. Like women, men sport curls, twists and braids.

How Urban Black Hairstyles Created: Updos

Some black hair styles are created with relaxed hair, and the updos are usually created with a lot of gel to hold the hair in place and make it last. With proper care, usually tying the hair up in a silk or satin scarf, the style can last a week or longer.

  1. To begin the style, the relaxed hair is washed and conditioned.
  2. A glue-in or sew-in weave or a hair piece (pony tail) may be added to give the hair length or extra thickness.
  3. Gel is usually applied for hold, but hair spray or mousse are also sometimes used. The hair is styled, usually sculpted into the desired look. Looks with ponytails or falls are popular.

The stylist may create a bang by swooping the front of the hair over to the side and onto the forehead. Some women prefer no bangs and having their hair slicked back into a ponytail or a dramatic sculpted updo. Next, the hair may be set on curlers. If a weave is used, the stylist may hot curl the hair later, adding water and gel to a wet and wavy weave (these weaves curl when water is added) or the stylist may leave the weave set the weave on curlers.

The majority of styles that are created in the hair salon with relaxed or natural African American hair entails sitting under a hooded dryer until the hair is completely dry. For sculpted styles, the hair may be hard to the touch when it is dry. Sculpted looks are not the only types of urban hair styles, though. There are many styles for hair that is natural.

Natural Urban Styles

Urban styles are certainly not limited to relaxed hair styles. Natural hair is edgy and fun. Popular urban hair styles for men and women are the twist out and braid out. Extremely curly, kinky hair is twisted in two strand twists for black hair or the hair is plaited while wet. When the hair dries completely the twists or braids are removed. The hair is then finger-combed into the desired look. The style creates attractive coils or crimps throughout the hair. A headband can be added to pull the hair away from the face, or the hair can be finger combed into a funky afro or a cute bobbed style, depending on the length of your hair. Some urban styles work for natural and processed hair.

Braids

Braids are yet another popular urban style for both men and women. The hair can be cornrowed or braided into single plaits in a variety of styles. Zig Zagged braids and parts give braids an edgy look. Men and women with relaxed or natural hair can get braids. Some women with natural hair see a relaxed style that they like and copy the style with braids. Braids are particularly popular in the summer because they can be easier to maintain and stay neat while you are on a summer vacation.

Color

Color is another popular component of urban black hairstyles. Shades of burgundy, brown, and copper are popular, and some women add exotic colors like blue or bright red to their hair. Some color is so neutral that you can only see it when the sun hits the hair. Other colors are bright and vibrant. All women with urban styles, however, do not go for the bright vibrant looks, but those colors tend to get the most attention. Now, it's time to choose your style.

When selecting your own style, try to take a picture of the look that you want and bring the picture with you to the stylist. Stylists are not miracle workers, so be understanding if the stylist is honest enough to tell you that the style is impossible to create in your hair. When getting a black urban hairstyle, you must be patient and have an open mind.
