Wedding Updos
From LoveToKnow Hair
There are many different style and variations on wedding updos. Finding the style that works best for your special day is almost as exciting as finding the gown!
Inspiration for Wedding Updos
The best way to find the perfect style from a variety of wedding updos is to find inspiration first. How do you want to feel? How do you see yourself looking your best in photos? What type of reception and vow exchange will you be sharing? All of these contributing factors can help you narrow a style down that fits your needs, your dress and your personality perfectly.
For inspiration, brides should look at as many bridal and beauty magazines as possible. Seek styles that work with dresses that closely resemble your own. Consider facial features that you want to draw attention to, and keep in mind the lines of your dress. High necked gowns look great with upswept hair, and low cut gowns are easily softened with loose waves.
Capture Your Look
For your special wedding day, you should be dressed and made to feel your absolute best. Hair should be freshly styled and adorned to celebrate this romantic occasion. The following styles will help you choose a look that compliments your dress and wedding theme.
- Romantic: For the incurable romantic, feminine and flowy hair works best. Think braided styles, twisted cornrows adorned with flowers, or daisy tiaras gracing a mane full of curl.
- Beach Wedding: Beach hair is normally disheveled and free spirited. Seek beach bride styles that mimic a tousled messy updo style. Work with curling irons and texturizing sprays to add fullness and wave. Keep your look sexy and loose.
- Formal bride: Formal hair is a perfect choice for church settings and winter brides, whose necklines are often higher. Consider a French twist or chignon for a flattering and classic formal style.
- Elegant bride: Elegant brides often choose structured gowns and simplistic hairstyles. To mimic this sophisticated flair, sweep hair into nape grazing low buns or side swept twists. Accessorize with a simple headpiece or fresh flower.
- Traditional bride: Traditional brides share a timeless look that never goes out of style. For an easy and traditional updo, roller set hair and pull half of it up, and leave half of it down in a tousled and feminine fashion. This style looks best with veils and tiaras.
- Modern bride: Modern brides often flaunt short choppy bangs paired with a low ponytail, bun or twist. Add some quirkiness with a large faux flower for drama.
Flowers and Hairpieces
Flowers and hairpieces are common for brides. There are pros and cons of wearing fresh flowers, as well as a hairpiece. Fresh flowers, not matter how pretty, run the risk of wilt throughout the ceremony or reception. On the other hand, hairpieces can be uncomfortable for some brides to wear long term.
When you go shopping for your gown, try on several hairpieces and find one that balances your dress. Rest assured you can always purchase the hairpiece later, so if no inspiration strikes, keep looking!
As a rule, most flowy and relaxed gowns look best with fresh flowers, while elegant and formal gowns (which have more structure) often look best with a simple hairpiece or unique accessory.
Booking a Consultation
Brides need to plan in advance when booking their hair appointments. Make sure you arrange a two week appointment prior to your wedding if you plan or having any color service such as highlights or color added to your style. Avoid drastic color or cut changes prior to your wedding.
Wedding updo trials are always recommended to ensure both you and your stylist can agree on a style and set aside the time needed too recreate your style on the big day. Although not as common, some brides have freelance hairstylists present at their ceremonies to fix and fluff their coifs prior to their grand entrance.
