It is true that in certain cultures body hair is perceived differently. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I find a small amount of underarm hair slightly sexy. Of course male or female strict hygene must be adhered to. It is becoming more and more less distastaful.

Sam - The amount of armpit hair you have (as well as other body hair and the thickness of the hair on your head) is determined by genetics, and there is nothing you can do to make it grow longer or thicker in that way.

Bonnie - Different medical conditions can affect hair growth and loss (including body hair), and any medication can also have an effect. You can consult with your physician for details about your specific condition and any side effects you are experiencing.

Acute illness (respiratory arrest) in 04 caused all hair in under arm and leg areas to go away. Why is this? What causes this?

Lucy - The color of armpit hair is determined by genetics and it is natural for it to darken after puberty. It will not get lighter again, but you could consider Laser Hair Removal or other techniques to permanently remove the hair if that is what you are interested in.

I have an Epilator too! It is awesome because I don't shave anymore and I remove my unwanted hair more often... I decided to get this wonderful, root-pulling machine because I'm very light-skinned and shaving since I was 10 has darkened my under arms and to me, they don't look pretty at all. I have black hair and it's always been a pain in the butt to remove it... Only a question:Will my armpits get light again?? I want to wear sleeve-less dresses and raise my arms without being so self-concerned. Please answer my question about under arm lightening! Thanks girls!

For about 2 years now I have been using an epilator for my armpits and it is absolutely fabulous! My hair is now growing back much finer than when I shaved and I don't need to worry about hair removal every day like when I shaved. I basically use the epilator every 2 weeks or so and the best part is that it's less painful than waxing since you don't have to yank all the hairs out at once (you do it as they start to grow so it's totally bearable). Also, when you wax you need to wait for your hair to grow a few centimeters but with the epilator as soon as they rear their ugly head, they are out!

I've had a lot of ingrown hairs and infections due to shaving. It's expensive and as long as one baths regularly and effectively (not rinsing, but actually scrubbing), there is less of a problem with dirt or sweat. Shaving takes time, and must be done regularly (or suffer the many health malefactors of waxing or lazers). It's quite a waste of time and money.

Something people don't realize is that underarm hair is very soft, same with leg hair. The reason it is coarse is because the hair hasn't fully grown out. Once it has, it is quite nice. Women especially have very soft hair (not talking about head, but underarm and legs).

I've also found that I get less chills. It's minor, but there. Hair is there to keep dirt away from the skin and keep warmth in. Hair is a natural protection, and while yes, one should scrub themselves well, it's there for a reason.

I understand that some people do not LIKE body hair, and I'm not entirely fond of flaunting it. I am quite happy wearing pants and a t-shirt, which hides any of my hair, and if people don't like it, they won't see it. My boyfriend actually likes that I don't shave, taking it that I'm a self-assured and confident woman rather than one who feels the need to shave or tan (another large health concern most get sucked into doing and is an entirely different debate). Most of my friends do not either; they'd rather use their time doing something else, waste less unnecessary resources used to make the products for shaving and water, and do not need to follow a social standard of dimorphism (the physical difference between genders, rather like a wide chest for men and smaller shoulders for women, etc).

Ayeh - The pores will not get bigger by shaving, but what happens is that the dark hair just at the surface of the skin (what the razor can't reach) may make the pores seem larger. You could try other hair removal techniques, such as Electrolysis or Laser Hair Removal for permanent results that won't leave those sorts of remnants.

I never shave my arm pitt hair since I was 25. Now I'm 36. I think every man should proud with their arm pitt hair.

Qwerty - Yes, any body hair will grow back after being shaved, but it will not grow back thicker or coarser because you've shaved it. Depending on your body chemistry and hair growth, it may take several days for the hair to grow back, or it could return more quickly.

If you shave your underarm hair will it grow back ? (after pueburty)

For me, shaving just makes me feel truly CLEAN. If you do it right, you don't have to worry about the "hot water chicken" look, and usually it stays cleaner longer. There is so much bacteria that can build up in thick hair, and it's known that armpit hair can often be even thicker than the hair on your head! If you shave, it smells fresher longer, and deodorant doesn't build up so easily and smell a little off if you apply it multiple times throughout the day. I think it's helpful.

In some cases, the armpit hairs attract peolple to you, The majority of basket ball fans today enjoy the bushy arm pit of the players. It keeps us watching them. It's bushy but neat. It's natural too.Imagine when you wipe off everything, it look like a chicken that was just cleaned in a hot water, for me it is disgusting. Please keep your hair and tell me how you feel before people on klausmano at yahoo dot de

Besides the effects of advertising to convince women to shave, after the invention of the safety razor, the other reason, and the reason that goes back to antiquity, is that shaving makes both men and women look younger.

Amarie - A lot of factors affect the growth rate of hair, including hormones, how the hair was removed, and age. Generally, armpit hair will begin to reappear within just a day or two, though some people may have it reappear much sooner or later.
