Curly Haired Girl - First, you'll want to stop heat styling your hair -- the added heat drys out hair and causes damage more quickly. A shea butter conditioner would be good for your hair, and you might want to consider a leave in conditioner as well to protect your hair during the day. Check out Best Moisturizer for Black Hair and Natural Hair Products for Blacks for some great suggestions. Best wishes!

Helen - The hormones from pregnancy often wreak havoc on your hair, so before you take drastic action I'd just wait a few months to let your hair get back to its natural state. Because you don't use heat and regularly condition, you're well on your way to healthy hair. If the split ends are really bad they may need to be trimmed to remove the damage, and be sure you're avoiding tight braids or other styles that add tension to the hair and can cause breakage. Best wishes!

I also use silicon mix and I love the way it make my relaxed hair feel strong and healthy. I also go to a dominican salon and even thought it is roller set and blown dry straight my hair has been growing like a weed. dominican salon use products from the islands and specialize in healthy hair care. so my fellow African- Amaerican ladies give ot a try.

I say try this dominican republic hair product called Silicon Mix. I am a 22yr old, African American & have long thick hair. I used to battle with dandruff, dry hair, split ends, my being really brittle after applying heat to it(even when I sat under a hooded dryer). I actually stopped going to the my hairdresser & started doing my hair myself & my hair started to grow. I would get my ends trim when they were suppposed to & even doing this I would have a close friend come trim my hair when I was doing my hair. I started using a dominican product called Salerm & it made my hair feel soft & light. I just tried Silicon mix in my hair & my hair has never looked so good. My last relaxer was 8 weeks ago & I'm not even considering put another one in my head again after using this product. My hair is now bouncy, light, shiny, extremely soft & looks healthy. I used the shampoo, conditioner & the intense leave in. If you only want a sample of this product I say try the conditioner (it's a great detangler even after you have rinsed it out of your hair & it makes your hair soft). The leave in made my hair feel silky & moisturized even after I blow dried my hair.

    • I usually use oil to give my hair a glossy look but I have yet to be in need of using it because my hair has a natural gloss to it because of Silicon Mix**

Use a Ceramic flat iron if your going to flat iron your hair. You can easily find out why ceramic is the best way to go when you are going to apply heat your hair (put in in your search engine)

If you can't find Silicon Mix in your local hair store you can find it online at a good price. Also do a search for "round brush hair" to find out about other dominican republic hair products.

Hair breakage is a serious issue but it is not hopeless. If you want your hair to look and stay healthy, you need to be sleeping on a satin pillowcase. I had heard a lot about them from friends and also from my stylist. She told me that cotton causes friction leaving you with split ends and frizzes. It also is naturally absorbent so it pulls the moisture from your hair and skin. The combination of dried out hair along with weakened ends due to the friction that cotton creates causes your hair to break and also hair loss. I switched to a satin pillowcase and Ive seen a huge difference in my hair and also with my skin. I dont wake up with those pillowcase lines on my face in the morning either. I found a website that has a page devoted to the benefits of sleeping on satin and they had some absolutely beautiful prints and solid pillowcases. I found a gorgeous pastel flower print. The company is A Touch Of Satin if you want to read about the benefits. Well, I hope this helps you out.

Robin - If you want to have your hair long again, check out How to Grow Your Hair Long and Long Hair Care for tips on helping your locks stay strong while they grow. You can also eat a diet for healthy hair to nourish your hair from the inside.

LaKeysha - You may want to try stronger moisturizers and conditioners to help keep your hair supple. Also, try not to wash your hair as frequently (every 2-3 days is sufficient) so the natural oils in your hair can protect it better. Be sure you aren't using tight styles that can put added stress on the hair, and use a satin pillowcase or hair scarf while sleeping to avoid tangles.

Annette - Humidity can certainly add to frizz; I'd suggest you consider an anti-frizz or smoothing serum to help keep your hair straight. Leave-in conditioners may help, or you may need to visit a salon or stylist experienced with your hair type for recommendations that can work with your climate. Best wishes!

Jo - There are several shampoos that are formulated to help with either straight or Curly Hair; you can choose the one that works best for your hair type and the style you want to achieve.

I have a curl and cannot get to the hair dresser. I want to straighten it and hot curl it. What do I wash it with?

Is there a product that I can put on my hair to stop it from 'going back' right after I staighten it?? I am african american and white. My hair is real coarse. It's very humid where I live and I soon as I flat iron it, my hair goes back to frizzy!!!

NaKeisha - Thank you for sharing your thoughts; you've obviously got a lot of great experience that will benefit our readers!

To Kenya- Also, not every relaxer (even those in professional lines) should be used on color treated hair. Be sure that your stylist is using one that is approved for colored hair. And at home, you need to be using a shampoo & conditioner that is made for color treated hair. Avlon has a really good moisturizing shampoo & conditioner set designed for color treated hair in their KeraCare line.

To Kenya- You need to use a Reconstructor to put back the proteins your hair looses during chemical treatments. There is a really good one made by CB Smoothe. It's called MRC Conditioner. It's a spray so you waste less product and unlike most reconstructors, it smells REALLY good. It also does not have to dry on hair and make it hard like some other reconstructors. Mizani also just released a new reconstructive system. It's a 4 part system called Renew Strength.

I went to the Jamaica and got my hair wet on the beach due to the hugs waves that day. Two days ago I got my hair colored. Now my hair keeps shedding. I don't know what to do. It is not breaking but just shedding. I was thinking about cutting it off. What can I do to stop it from shedding?

Lorine - You need to find products that work for you; one brand may work great for someone else but won't be the best for your hair type and texture. If you are getting a buildup of product in your hair, you can change shampoo and conditioner every week or so to help wash that out and keep your hair free from residue. If you continue to have problems, I'd suggest consulting with a stylist experienced with natural hair care to see what they'd recommend for you. Best wishes!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR SHAMPOOS AND CONDITIONERS, I HAVE RELAXED HAIR. ALSO DOES ALL NATURAL HAIR PRODUCTS GOOD FOR YOUR RELAXED HAIR? AND WHAT DO YOU THINK OF BEAUTY 4 ASHES HAIR PRODUCTS

-- Contributed by: LORINE

Adrienne - Unfortunately, the only healthy way to deal with this is to let the hair grow out; eventually the perm will relax and disappear. You can try some straightening or relaxing techniques, but because they're very intense they can damage the hair, and the perm itself is an intense chemical treatment. You can also try a good conditioner and specialized shampoos to help try to add body, fullness, and bounce back to your style. Best of luck!

I let myself be talked into a perm and now I wish I had my thick BLACK hair back. The perm is only a week old and I hate it. Is there anything I can do, it feels like a limp mess atop my head and has NO body or fullness?

Jasmine -- You should ask your stylist what products they use on your hair; you should be able to buy those products at the salon to keep the same great look and feel at home.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

what conditioner can i use to keep my hair feeling and looking as silky as it does once i step out if the salon?

-- Contributed by: jasmine

Amberly - Be sure you choose a product formulated to protect your hair that can help moisturize it. Also, look for a lighter product that won't weigh hair down -- a foam should be a good choice for that.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

whats good to use when i twist my hair?is it ok to use foam lotion(wrap)?
