Kathryn - You'd need to contact individual charities and wig manufacturers to see if they'd be interested in dreadlock hair -- many of them won't accept hair in locks because it can be more challenging to put into a wig, and often times it may be extensively damaged (not that your hair is, since you keep it natural). If you contact a manufacturer of African American wigs, you may have more success finding someplace to donate. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzI am African American with long natural locks, which some people call dread locks. My hair is mixed gray. I would like to donate it. Is there any group(s) that would accept my hair as a gifr? I plan to cut it very soon. I let it grow this lng with the hope of donating it.
-- Contributed by: Kathryn GadsonDawn - You can visit the websites above and print off their guidelines for donating hair, then take those guidelines with you to the salon so your stylist can follow them when cutting your hair for a donation. It doesn't matter if they haven't heard of it before - independent donations are made all the time, and it's fine as long as you follow the guidelines!
-- Contributed by: MayntzI WOULD LOVE TO DONATE MY HAIR FOR CANCER VICTIMS, I'VE BEEN TO MANY HAIRDRESSERS AND THEY HAVEN'T HEARD OF DONATING HAIR, CAN YOU RECOMMEND A PLACE FOR ME - THANKS
-- Contributed by: DAWN BROHIERVery glad to share the information, Angela!
-- Contributed by: MayntzBrittany - Thin hair is still able to be donated - wig manufacturers use all hair textures. The layers can be a problem, since the shortest layer must meet the minium length requirements for a donation - your stylist can help you measure this. As for the coloring, again, have your stylist check the health of your hair to determine if it is usable.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI am very happy to donate my hair, i feel bless to know i can do this
-- Contributed by: Angela RogersCan i donate my hair if it is thin. And can i donate it if its layered? And its been highlighted before, but its been about a year and a half since then. Could i still donate it??
-- Contributed by: BrittanyLuisa - You can check out Locks of Love, Hair Donation to Cancer Patients, and Free Wigs for Cancer Patients for organization information for donating your hair. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzAlexia - Most companies will not pick up the cut hair, but you may be able to find a local group that is doing a hair donation drive - contact schools and beauty academies for leads. You can also contact local salons to see if they accept hair donations, or check out Locks of Love and Hair Donation to Cancer Patients for organization information.
-- Contributed by: MayntzHi, my name is Luisa, and ever since my friends boyfriend died of cancer, I wanted to donate my hair... my hair is super long and healthy. I want to know where i could donate it... thank you!
-- Contributed by: Luisai did cut my hair this afternoon and i would like to know where i can go to donate or someone can pick up , please i need someone help me out , CAROLINA.
-- Contributed by: where to go .Kewykev - Most hair donations must be at least 12 inches, but some manufacturers and organizations may take hair as short as yours. You can contact local salons to see who is participating in donation events (usually the hair cut is free to participants), or you can contact hair academys or even school service organizations to see if they're planning these types of donation drives.
-- Contributed by: MayntzSand - It takes several inches of hair to create the scalp mat and to style the hair appropriately for a wig, and short hair just isn't long enough to create a suitable wig. Many wig requests are for longer hair as well, so that makes a long donation even more necessary. You can contact individual wig manufacturers for their requirements, and some of them may be able to use a shorter donation for other parts of the manufacturing process.
-- Contributed by: MayntzMy hair is 9 1/2 inches to the longest end in a pony tail. I am looking for a salon in the Sacramento area where I can donate. All I ask in return is a decent haircut. Can someone please help me out.
-- Contributed by: Kevvykev in SacramentoI am wondering why the donated has to be long as 12 inches. Would it be possible to donate short hair. I would like to donate my hair but my hair is long around 6 inches.
-- Contributed by: SandSSG Steven and Holly Tischer - It's admirable that you want to start this type of awareness campaign and charitable contributions, but hair must be at least 8-12 inches long (depending on the manufacturer) to make a wig, because quite a bit of that length is lost to help make the base of the wig. If the hair is shorter, it isn't able to make a full wig. Some companies will sell unsuitable or too short hair to help offset costs, however, and you might want to contact the manufacturers about this option.
-- Contributed by: MayntzKristin - Wig manufacturers require that hair is tied in a ponytail to keep it from getting snarled while transported, and to keep the hairs aligned in the same way so their texture is preserved. Once hair is no longer in the ponytail, it is virtually impossible to incorporate it effectively into a wig, so it would no longer be useful for their manufacturing process. Some companies will accept untied hair for other types of wig manufacturing (often to be sold), so you can contact them about that option if you are still interested.
-- Contributed by: MayntzMy husband and I shaved our heads in order to donate our hair for cancer patients. We did this to honor cancer patients everywhere. He is in the Army and would like to start collecting donations from other soldiers by offering free haircuts and gathering their hair for this cause. Clearly, these samples would not be anywhere close to your high expectation of 8-12 inches and a ponytail. However, these soldiers want to be a part of solution. How can their hair be used in this effort? On a side note, my hair is about 8 inches long but was not put in a pony tail, can I still send it? Please let us know as soon as possible so we can let our troops get started on this great cause! Thanks! SSG Steven and Holly Tischer, US Army
-- Contributed by: SSG Steven and Holly TischerMy eight year old son has been growing his hair for two years and is about ready to cut it. He would like to donate it, but its nowhere near 8-12 inches in a pony tail. We will probably buzzing it as part of a fundraising challenge, so the total length would be enough, but it wouldn't be tied into pony tail. Would his hair be eligible for a donation? Any suggestions for us?
-- Contributed by: kristinDebbie - I'd recommend keeping your hair in tip-top shape (good conditioners, etc.) and letting the dye fade completely, then waiting for several more months for the hair to strengthen. You can then contact the different hair donation organizations for their requirements, but be aware that several of them will not accept gray hair, depending on the types of wigs they make and who they're for. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzShannon - Bleached hair is not acceptable for donating, since the hair will be more likely to break under the stress of the wig manufacturing process. When your hair grows out naturally, though, you will be able to donate easily.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI have been growing my hair for donation for about 16 months and just learned that permanent dye is not allowed. I used a store brand and did not check the semi vs permanent disclosure. I have rarely used color but at age 48 the gray sprigs were a bother. I last used color in December 2008. It faded in a few weeks. I am back to my little gray sprigs again. How can I donate? I have 13 inches in my longest layers and about 11 inches in the next layer.
-- Contributed by: Debbiemy hair is highlighted with bleach so its only like half bleached... is that okayy?
-- Contributed by: shannonStephanie - The reason that many organizations do not accept bleached or colored hair is that the process to make the wigs is very intense and hair that has been subjected to those processes breaks more easily and won't make the best wigs. You can contact the organizations, however, to see if they can accept the hair for other purposes that will be helpful.
-- Contributed by: MayntzIs there anything that they can do with bleached hair? Hair is bleached and I have been growing out to donate...just found out Locks of Love won't take it. Hair is healthy, just bleached. This is a real bummer. Will they take it if it is colored over the bleach, if it is still healthy?
-- Contributed by: StephanieYou can contact the donations above for information on the type of hair they will accept for donations and how it should be sent to them. You can also contact local salons to see if they have connections they can recommend for hair donations. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: Mayntz4th donation today. I figure if you can grow it you can share it!!
-- Contributed by: Heatherhi,i own a hair salon.I have collected approx 10ponytails to make wigs.i wud like it donated to the cancer people.i live in jhb and like to know where can i send these thru or i can perhaps drop it off on regular basis.plz help
-- Contributed by: hemathe hair is 10+ inches, never known a chemical or styling product, but 50-50 gray and auburn. Where can I send it, please. It seems that no one is providing wigs for mature women who can not afford a wig made of human hair. The braids have been cut and are ready to go, but I can't seem to find any place to send them.
-- Contributed by: barbaragetting ready to donate tomorrow! YAY! 3 years of growing choppin it tomorrow!
-- Contributed by: Enter your name hereHi. I am about to donate my long hair after knowing the effects of losing hair of two of my friends. Its at waist length now and I am checking if is time to donate or of I need to grow it a little further down the back of my body. I feel great I can do this to help someone Hugs and Smiles
-- Contributed by: Dee (Diane)hi,I have dreadlocks that need to come off and would like to donate(I know it's not appropriate for kids but cancer can affect all ages). my hair has never been dyed or treated and is down past my waist, if anyone knows please send me a mes'.
-- Contributed by: ruthSarah - Check out these articles for different companies that accept hair donations: Locks of Love and Hair Donation to Cancer Patients. Different companies have different requirements, so be sure to learn what they need before you send your hair in.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzthank you :) i just cut my hair today and am now looking for a cancer place to send it too! xoxox
-- Contributed by: SarahJerri - Different hair collection companies have different requirements for the type of hair they are able to accept. Check out Locks of Love and Hair Donation to Cancer Patients for more information on different organizations.
-- Contributed by: MayntzSarah - It takes 6-10 hair donations to make a single wig, and it's not likely that you'd be able to track precisely where your hair donation goes. You could, however, meet with cancer patients who have received wigs to get that same personal connection and see how much your donation means.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzi have white hair and would like to donate it. pantene would not take it so the last time i was ready to donate it ended up on the salon floor. what a waste!! help me help
-- Contributed by: jerrimy hair is 33 inches long when dry its probably another 6 or so inches when wetmaybe more anyway i want to keep 16 inches whisch is just below my shoulder so id be giving 17 inches of hair my hair has never been coloured or cut and i keep it healthy i have probably straightened it 5 times ever im 18 years old and my hair colour is probably a light honey blonde i was going to let it grow some more but it grows slow and im hoping to join the police this year so im cutting it early in the year instead of the end but i want to meet the person who my hair goes to and i dont think we do it here in australia is there anyway that it would be possible for me to meet them or is there a special donating group that lets that happen?
-- Contributed by: SarahMaria - We are not a collection agent for hair donations. You can contact the organizations listed above for their donation requirements and shipping addresses, or read Hair Donation to Cancer Patients for more information.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzhi, I have a question. Can you guys provide an address of a salon or even your address so i can ship my hair? I live in Los Angeles california
-- Contributed by: MariaBonnie - If your daughter's hair is long enough for a donation, you don't necessarily need to visit any salon for it to be suitable as a donation. You can put her hair in a ponytail yourself, then trim off the tail (above the elastic, keeping it securely together) and mail it to an organization of your choice. Any salon can then style her hair. Otherwise, you can call local salons to see if they offer discounts or are planning any donation drives.
-- Contributed by: MayntzMy daughter is 5 and considering donating her hair. Is there a local hairdresser in or around Methuen, MA 01844 that participates.
-- Contributed by: Bonnie TardugnoKate - You will have to contact individual wig manufacturers to see what their requirements are for hair donations. They don't have to be in South Africa, either; you can easily ship the cut hair to any company that will accept it, but be sure you ship it packaged appropriately so it can be useful.
-- Contributed by: MayntzJeanne - Dyed or highlighted hair is difficult to make into wigs because it is usually more damaged or delicate. You can contact individual manufacturers to see if they may be able to use your hair for other purposes instead of making a wig; they may be able to use it to raise money for the organization, which is just as worthwhile.
-- Contributed by: MayntzJoAnn - Dyed hair is typically more damaged and delicate to work with, and it isn't able to withstand the wig manufacturing process as easily. You should contact individual wig manufacturers to find out their requirements for hair's condition.
-- Contributed by: MayntzIs there anywhere in South Africa who will take my 30cm cut hair? Help - I really want to donate but can't find anyone!
-- Contributed by: KateI have highlighted hair that I'd like to donate and cannot find an organization that helps those with medical conditions that will accept it. Please advise.
-- Contributed by: jeanneI am looking to donate my hair. I am unable to find any one that will take dyed hair? Is there any one out their that can use my hair?
-- Contributed by: JoAnnSusana - You will need to contact local salons to see if they collect hair for donations. Sometimes schools or salons will do special events with free or discounted hair cuts for donations.
-- Contributed by: MayntzHello i just want to know were can my husband donate his hair we live in Elizabeth and i'm trying to look for salon's who would do that so can you please tell us were is a closer place. thank you.
-- Contributed by: susana malacaraAli - Not all organizations will accept highlighted or dyed hair; you will need to review each organizations' requirements to see if your hair can be accepted. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzCVossler - You should contact Pantene directly about smaller donations, and you can also contact wig manufacturers to ask if they can make an exception in some cases.
-- Contributed by: MayntzWhat happens if you have highlighted hair but you want to send it in
-- Contributed by: AliMy daughter did locks of ove for her first haircut ever at age 5-now she is 7 1/2 and is dying to cut her hair-we have a solid 8 inches and I saw that Pantene accepts smaller donations-does anyone know where you send it? There website does not mention it. Thanks a ton-there is no way all that hair is going to waste- you know the gorgrous natural blonde hair that we as adults pay for.
-- Contributed by: where do you send the pantene donated hairAmeriCancer accepts all hair types. We re-route your hair to Companies who in turn make wigs for cancer patients at no cost to them. If you can't figure out who to send it to, please visit our website.
-- Contributed by: AmeriCancer.OrgAshley - Hair loss can happen both ways. The degree of hair loss can vary for each individual depending on how they react to the treatment, but some people prefer to shave off their hair right away instead of deal with the stress of gradual loss.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI don't know if you know this but on the victims, does the hair fall out or do they shave it off before that happens?
-- Contributed by: AshleyJane - Some companies will accept gray or white hair; you will have to contact them individually for their requirements. Contact information for each company is listed in the article above. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzDO any companies accept gray/white hair for wigs for adults? How do I contact them?
-- Contributed by: JaneJulie - Some companies will accept dyed hair and others won't, depending on the chemical damage and condition of the hair. Minimum length requirements also vary, but generally hair must be at least 10 inches long to donate. You can contact individual wig manufacturers or participating salons for current needs and requirements.
-- Contributed by: MayntzSusan - The age of hair doesn't matter, as long as it's healthy and long enough to be useful for a wig. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzCristina - Different companies have different length requirements, but in general hair must be at least 10 inches long to donate. Contact individual companies or salons for more details.
-- Contributed by: MayntzMy friend and I would like start growing our hair to donate to cancer victims. What is the minimum length acceptable and is permanently colored hair acceptable? Thanks!
-- Contributed by: Julie RobsonI have braided hair that is 80 yars old (or more). It is still soft and a nice shade of brown. Is it still usable?
-- Contributed by: Susanhow long does my hair have to be in order for me to donate it?
-- Contributed by: cristinaKelsey - Shorter hair generally can't be used for making a wig because much of the length is lost during the manufacturing process. Some manufacturers may accept shorter donations, however, because they can use them for other purposes. Contact the manufacturers directly for their current needs and requirements.
-- Contributed by: MayntzStefanie - In general wig manufacturers prefer hair that has not been chemically treated, but some are able to dye the hair back to its natural shade and use it anyway. Hair that has been heavily treated will be more brittle and less suitable for a wig, but you can contact the organizations listed above for their specific policies.
-- Contributed by: MayntzDalila - You can check out the organizations listed above or visit Locks of Love for information on where to donate hair. Most wig manufacturers require hair to be 10-12 inches or longer to be made into a wig, though some may use shorter donations for other purposes, including selling it to raise money to support the organization.
-- Contributed by: MayntzDoes your hair have you be ten inches? Could it be less?
-- Contributed by: kelsey stramelHi, I have very thick long blonde hair. I have been told by many people that I should try and donate my hair. I would love to donate my hair but it has been highlighted, can I still donate? Thank you,
-- Contributed by: StefanieHI I WOULD LOVE TO DONATE MY DAUGHTER'S HAIR I NEED TO KNOW WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO. I'LL APPRECIATED IF I GET SOME INFORMATION AS TO HOW MANY INCHES IT HAS TO BE DONATED AND WERE DO I SEND IT. THANK YOU
-- Contributed by: DALILA RAMIREZAmanda - You can check out the links above or see our article on Locks of Love for where to send the hair. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzI'm going to get my hair cut in a half hour, and i'm so excited i've been growing my hair out just for this
-- Contributed by: MarkieHi I'm 16 years old and I'm donating my hair this weekend and I want to give it to a cancer victom. I'm so happy about this I've growing my hair for three years and finally I can get it off and give It to someone who needs it more than I do.
-- Contributed by: scalett millerI already cutt my hair and it is in a pony tail but i do not now where is that i have to send it to.
-- Contributed by: Amanda=]Emily and Helen - Wig companies require 10+ donations to make a wig, so one person's hair is not enough. Most companies cannot track one donation to ensure it is part of a specific wig, either, since there are a lot of factors to consider including exact shade, texture, and length. You could be prepared to donate your hair as a loving gesture of support, however, and I'm sure your mother and mother-in-law would appreciate your motive.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI recently found out my mom has breast cancer. We both have red hair and i would like to give her mine or be ready to if she loses it durin Chemotherapy. What do i need to do?
-- Contributed by: Helen HammontreeI have very long hair that my mother in law has always said she wished she had... Recently we found out that she will be undergoing chemotherapy and will probably lose her hair. I am wondering if there is any way that I can cut my hair and have it be used in a wig for her. Any suggestions or companies I can contact about such a thing would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
-- Contributed by: EmilyLogan - The hair length is measured from its shortest spot. If you have layers, the shortest layer must meet the minimum length to quality for donating. As for where to donate, you can contact local salons and ask if they participate in these sorts of charity programs, or watch for malls and high schools to run Locks of Love events where they collect many donations at once, usually in exchange for free or very discounted hair cuts.
-- Contributed by: MayntzJeanette - Different manufacturers will accept different colors of hair, even gray hair. You can contact individual manufacturers and charitable organizations to be sure they will accept it.
-- Contributed by: MayntzSue Santos and D.Cortes - The minimum hair length varies for different wig manufacturers, but usually 8 inches is just too short because the hair must be trimmed first to be perfectly even, then a lot of that length is used to create the base of the wig. I'd suggest contacting different manufacturers to determine their minimum length requirements and how they accept donations.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzim interested in donating my hair, does it have to be 10inches off my sholders? i also would like to know where i can get it cut and donate to locks of love in my area.
-- Contributed by: loganCan you give me the name of where I can donate my gray hair for a cancer patients?
-- Contributed by: JeanetteMy son wants to donate his hair; he has about 8 inches. Who can we contact to find out more about donating.
-- Contributed by: D.CortesI would like to donate my daughters hair but it's only 8 inches long.Who can i donated 8 inches to?
-- Contributed by: Sue SantosHi Tiffany, If you visit the website for the hair donation organization you wish to donate to, they will provide you with the correct address to send the hair. When you go to a site, look for a small link that says "contact us" at the bottom or top of the page.
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyI would like to donate my hair, but I need an address.
-- Contributed by: Tiffany SasserAs always, watch the fine print. Locks of Love doesn't have a great ratio between the amount of hair donated and the number of wigs given to people. Also, they do not provide wigs for cancer patients as most people think. Instead, they provide to those afflicted with alopecia. Yes, that is also an unfortunate disease, but if you're wanting to help cancer patients, you may want to try another organization. Happy Donating!
-- Contributed by: do your researchHi, I would just like to make a suggestion, if people who wanted to donate their hair gave you their name & address online...Why can't you mail them a postage free envelope to mail you the hair in...You would more than likely get many more donations then you do now because...like myself would love to donate my hair.... but Can't because i don't understand how. Hope You like my idea.
Sincerely A Wanna B Participant-- Contributed by: biggreeneyedgirl
Hello - Usually hair donations for cancer patient wigs are required to be a minimum of seven to ten inches. You may be able to donate your son's hair to an organization to be sold rather and the money used to benefit wig programs, however. Check with any of the organizations listed above for more on shorter hair donation policies.
-- Contributed by: Amy Finleyhello i have cut my son hair i will like to donate this hair to kids with cancer the hair is about 4 to 5 inches long what can i do who can i talk to
-- Contributed by: hello answer me backCheck with a local cancer center. When I was undergoing chemo treatment, the cancer center had a room with donated wigs, scarves, etc. and these were available (free of charge) to anyone undergoing treatment. Once my hair grew back, I took up a collection of wigs from people and donated them to the cancer center for others to use.
-- Contributed by: Brenda ShewHi Sally, Unfortunately most organizations only accept human hair for cancer patient wigs, not weaves. You may want to check with your local salon - there is the possibility the weaves could be sold and the money donated for cancer patients.
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyHi C.N: It is so wonderful that your girls have decided to donate their hair to help others! I would contact the organization your daughter donated to and ask them directly about the certificate and confirmation. Some donation websites do post lists of child donors, so you can also check the organization's website.
Most organizations ask for a minimum of eight inches of hair for donation; however, if Locks of Love receives donations of between six to ten inches, the hair is sold and the money used towards the costs of creating the patients' wigs. So your 5 yr. old's hair would still be beneficial to the cause. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyChristmas of 2006, my young daughter (3 1/2) wanted to cut her hair and donate it to L.O.L. We printed out the form off the internet, filled it out, and followed the instructions to a t. Her ponytail that was cut off, measured 11-12 inches. Not, that this is why we donated, but my daughter never received the "certificate of giving" as was stated she receive per the form we completed. Is there another way we are confirmed the donation has indeed been received by such organizations? Also, again a few weeks ago, my now 5 yr. old lil' girl decided she wanted to donate her hair. This time we ended up with a pony about 6-7 inches long, yet we would still like to donate it. Where can we send this one?
Thank you for your assistance.
-- Contributed by: C.N. MartinI used to ware weaves, as a result I have a lot of hair pieces unused to donate. Tell me if this is ok and where to send pieces
-- Contributed by: sally bakerHi Kids, Hope this hair helps your cause and makes you feel as beautiful as you are! My girlfriends Bunny and Barb decided I might need a new doo. So what better than to help are little friends get a new doo! That's what made me decide to cut it off. Good luck in your battle, and God Bless You,
Your short hair friend, Jane Dufresne-- Contributed by: Jane Dufresne
Hi! I recently cut my hair and I would love to be able to donate it. However, I have only seen that it must be 10 inches at least. I have about six inches. Is there ANY organization that would take it? Don't boys need wigs as well? Please, I would truly appreciate any information that is available. God bless you.
-- Contributed by: SandraMy dear grandmother has stage 4 cancer. She is very active in her community and church. She doesn't have a lot of money to pay for a wig. I was wondering if people donate silver grey hair for cancer patients. Please contact me. I would love to encourage her about your responce. Thank you! Carrie
-- Contributed by: Carrie FleckCheryl - I'd recommend you call some local salons and see if they can help you find the best place to donate your hair, though many of the organizations listed above will accept mail-in donations if you follow their guidelines for how to cut and package the hair.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI want to donate my hair when i get it cut but i am not sure where to take the hair once it is cut...do you know of any in the state of Virginia?
-- Contributed by: cherylThank you for sharing JoAn, it's great to have another resource. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzPink Heart Funds "Ponytail Kids Club" also accepts ponytails for kids with cancer. JoAn Niceley a cancer survivor and wig specialist for cancer patients founded Pink Heart Funds and it is a non-profit Mississippi based Charity that provides wigs 100% free of charge for children and women around the United States.
-- Contributed by: JoAn NiceleyHepsi - Unfortunately, most wig manufacturers cannot create custom wigs in that way because multiple donations are required to create one full wig. You can, however, donate your hair as a loving gesture of support for your mother, and I'm sure she'll appreciate it.
-- Contributed by: MayntzAnna - The shortest part of your hair will need to meet the length requirement in order to be donated. To make layered style wigs, the manufacturers will use long hair, put it in the wig first, and then style it accordingly.
-- Contributed by: MayntzHi, I was wondering if you would make custom wigs. My mom was diagnosed with cancer and I would like a wig made for her with my hair. Is that possible? Thank you for your help.
-- Contributed by: HepsiHi, I was wondering about the length requirment. I know that it has to be at least 10 -12 inches long but does that mean the length has to be all around meaning one straight across length because i have layered hair so the bottom section of my hair is 10 inches, but my top to middle sections are a lot less in length. So could i donate that? thank you
-- Contributed by: AnnaPantene Beautiful Lengths 511 Wisconsin Drive New Richmond, WI 54017-2613
-- Contributed by: JenDeena - You can contact the company for a shipping address, but you should note that most wig manufacturers require at least 10-12 inches of hair to make wigs. Requirements vary, however, and you can check to see their exact specifications.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI want to donate my hair. I cut off eight inches and i was going to donate it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, but i can't find an address to ship it to.
-- Contributed by: DeenaAmanda - Many wig manufacturers require minimum lengths because a lot of the hair has to be used to create the base of the wig, so shorter hair won't have enough left to style. Different companies have different length requirements, though, and you can investigate different individual companies to see what length they prefer.
-- Contributed by: MayntzMelissa - Sorry about the omission there; I've added the link to the text above!
-- Contributed by: MayntzI am twelve years old donating my hair to cancer I think it is really awsome but other people just laugh. I don't give into peeer pressure but I want to kno if we only donate 10 inches or more
-- Contributed by: AmandaI might be missing something here, it's been a long day, but where is the address for "Wigs For Kids" so I can send in my hair, please.
-- Contributed by: MelissaTomi - Unfortunately, it takes a lot of hair to make a wig and manufacturers need to start with longer lengths so they can work with it easily to make the body of the wig. Your hair would need to be longer to donate.
-- Contributed by: MayntzIs there any place that will take 6 inches of hair? I'm thinking about getting of those cute bobs and I want to donate the cutted hair for a good cause.
-- Contributed by: TomiIt's good to know that Locks of Love works to provide wigs for a variety of conditions; if you're interested in just donating your hair for cancer patients, you may want to choose a different organization. Thanks for the clarification!
-- Contributed by: MayntzGina's comment is not true. Locks of Love makes wigs for children who suffer from a variety of illnesses that cause hair loss, and cancer is one of them. See from yourself at locksoflove.org and click on LOL kids.
-- Contributed by: AmyJust a note - Locks of Love DOES NOT make wigs for cancer patients. Please check on whichever charity you are interested in before you send your hair, so you aren't sorry later to find out they sold it...
-- Contributed by: GinaSergio - You can call local salons and see if they participate in donation programs, or else you can investigate the resources listed above for how to mail in your hair donation.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI'm interested in donating my hair. Do you have any suggestions where I can go in the Dallas,Tx area?
-- Contributed by: Sergio S.I have very curly hair. It isn't coarse like many varieties of curly hair is. Because of that, every time I have tried to doate in the past (I like to cut my hair short after it reaches my waist, always have), I have been told that my hair just isn't usable when I have been in the salons. I figure it is just because they don't understand how to really style my long hair. But because of this, I have never sent my hair in. Would my hair possibly not be used if I sent it in?
-- Contributed by: SarahKelly - Color treated hair cannot be used to make wigs because it is generally more damaged and the color will fade, making the wig unwearable later on. You'll have to wait until your hair is grown out with its natural color.
-- Contributed by: MayntzMy hair is beautiful and long, I am 52 years old and I would say I ma at least 25 percent gray, originally dark brown. Is there no one putting together graying hairpieces for men with cancer over 50. I find it hard to believe. I am disapointed to think I have been telling people I was going to donate my hair only to find out nobody wants it. So pass the word. Jim T

JanJacs7 - See the answer below for details; it takes 10+ donations to make a single wig so it can't be done with just yours, though you could donate your hair in your mother's honor as a wonderful gesture of support and love.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI have over 20 inches of hair, along with 10 inches from both of my daughters hair. I have been planning on donating my hair to locks of love anyways but than my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer in nov. of 07 she had it removed but it was found in her lymph nodes, and will be going through chemotherapy. Is their any kind of orgnization that is able to take the hair that we can donate and make a wig for her? I was planning on donating to locks of love before I found out about my Mother and know would like to have a wig for her made from mine and my daughters hair.
-- Contributed by: janjacs7Chelsea - Usually you can't donate your hair for their specific wig, because it takes 10+ donations to make a single wig. You could, however, donate the hair in their honor, which would be a touching and loving gesture.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzis there any way for me to donate hair for a wig for someone that I know who is battling cancer?
