Katie, Shoulder length hair typically refers to a length that falls right at, or just above or below your shoulders. If your hair is extremely thick, you may want to consider asking your stylist to use thinning shears to reduce the volume. There are also many different styles you can create with medium length hair - see the following for more details: Medium Hair Style Pictures, Medium Hair Styles, and Medium Length Hair.

I have red hair and it is thick and does not like to stay straightened no matter what. It is shoulder length and what do you think i should do besides letting it down or putting it in a ponytail because ponytails dent my hair badly.

I'm native american mixed with asian, italian, and lots of different dominican races, and so my skin is a tan color. I have dark brown eyes. My hair is a super dark shade of brown. I can get color in my hair as long as it washes out. Is there any type of washable colors for the hair that I can put in? (Not like a full hair dye, but for streaks) Im looking for bright colors, such as orange, pink, blue, green, ect.

Bree - If you are outdoors a lot in the summer, your hair will naturally develop highlights because of the sun you're exposed to. You can minimize that by trying a color-depositing shampoo, such as one that matches your base hair color so you can keep it from getting the highlights as strongly. You can also consider getting some Hair Lowlights Shades put in to counteract the highlights.

Well I have nautral red highlights and I hate them in the summer is there a way to get rid of them?

EmoBella - Purple can be great for flair, but you'll want to be sure it will be accepted at your work or school before you opt for a permanent color. Check out Purple Hair Highlight for more ideas.

I have dark brown hair but I was thinking of going with purple coon tails when I get my hair cut next. Is it too much? Would the purple look ok? i dyed my hair purple before, but it was only temporary... Should I go with it?

Bewild.com Has a huge selection of hair colors. They even have glow in the dark hair dye.

Rebecca - If your red shade is very dark or rich, it may be best to strip it out first so it doesn't react as much with the new light brown dye. Remember, though, that dyes can react differently depending on how chemically treated your hair is and what shade you want to go to. Always try a test patch first!

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

Sue - You'll want to find the Right Hair Color for You first, especially if you don't want quite your natural shade. Then follow the instructions on the kit carefully (doing a test patch first) to see if you can get the results you like. Different dyes can react differently, especially if your hair is previously colored, so you may also want to consult a stylist for the best results.

I have been dying my hair red for a number of years. I would like to go to a light brown (which is fairly close to my natural color) and maybe put some blonde highlights in. I have had it dyed professionally but I usually go to the beauty supply place and buy the same hair dye and developer and do it at home since I have super long hair and its always over $100 when I have it done else where. Should I strip the red out of my hair to prevent it from coming through with the light brown??

-- Contributed by: Rebecca

I was light blonde and wanted to go red. i did it brown then red with live colour and it has worked but I dont like it and want to go back blonde, what is the best way to do it using home kits.

-- Contributed by: Sue

Hi LeeAnn, You might want to consider going to a professional hair colorist instead of re-dying it yourself -- he or she will know the right products and color mixes to give you the color you want. You risk greater damage and possible breakage to your hair with re-dying it in short periods of time. Good luck!

I tried re-highlighting my hair the other day and it came out yellow for some reason which has never happened. Then i tried to do like a blondish brown over it and parts of i are kinda green. Can i re dye it the blondish brown again to cover the green?

Hi Aimee, It can be difficult to determine whether the color will come out the way you'd like with at home color kits, especially when trying to lighten your hair dramatically. Your best bet would be to try a strand test prior to coloring to make sure it is the color that you want. Best wishes.

Norma - Any moisture - sweat, swimming, washing - will eventually wear out the dye on your hair, but it will take quite awhile. Use a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated to help maintain your color, and you shouldn't have problems.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

i just got my hair dyed from dark brown to a medium reddish brown. it looks awesome but i love to work out too, so does the sweat from my head help get rid of the color? please respond, thanx

are you supposed to buy a bleaching kit to bleach your hair, or can you just use bleach that you'd use in the laundry, like clorox?

-- Contributed by: paul cates

Lochie - If you can keep control of your hair easily, you can dye it both colors at once -- leave a bit of overlap so the tips blend in with the rest of the color. If you're nervous, though, you may want to rest your hair a few days between the first color and the second to give it a chance to recover. If you've never dyed your hair before, I'd recommend taking it in stages. Best of luck!

Hi. I was thinking of getting my hair cut 'scene hair' you know short layers and stuff. umm, but if i dye it at home like blond and then the ends brown what do i do? do i dye the blonde all over then brown once it drys? or brown at the bottom first then blonde ?

S

HELP!!

-- Contributed by: Lochie

Sarah - The ends of hair are the oldest, most damaged parts of the hair. You could get a bit of a trim to help eliminate some damage or you may need to leave the coloring agent on the ends a bit longer to help it absorb more fully.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

I have dying my hair red for 6 years now. Over the years i have use different brands/colours. Over this last year the ends of my hair are not colouring very well. Any ideas !!

Thanks Sarah

Gwen - If you're looking for such a drastic, overall change, I'd recommend going to a hair salon for the initial coloring. That way, they can adjust the color for a great look to cover the old highlighting, and you can do touchups at home to keep it fabulous.

I have "heavy" highlighted hair. My natural color is dark brown. I have been hightlighting for 2 years (at one point it was totally blond) now it is more highlighted all over with dark roots. Roots are are not extremely exagerated. I want to go to a carmel brown all over and auburn highlights or something like that. What do you suggest? I would like to do it at home but am a little nervous since my hair is has been highlighted.

Hey, So this is my first time dying my hair. I have a natural dark strawberry blonde color and I want to go to a brunette. I am a little scared because I don't know how it will look but then again, I really want to do it because I think it will give me a nicer looking complexion. I think I am going to go with a milk chocolate brown on top with a couple highlights and as it gets down to the hair underneath, I want it to fade to an esspresso brown which is basically close to black... ahhhh. I am sooo excited, you have no idea! Lol. Emily

Devon - Radical colors can be a fun look. You might try some chunky hair highlights, or just color the tips of your hair. If you color all your hair in such unusual shades, you might get the crazy looks you don't want, but just a fun accent will be noticeable without being too outrageous.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

I want to use colors like red, blue, yellow, and pink. Its only for the summer but I want it!! Will it look good or stupid?? I wont go to a salon, my sisters does hair so she knows the products but Im a brunett so the colors might look bad. I want people to say wow when I walk by and not in the bad way.

-- Contributed by: devon

Hello, I have died my hair twice in the last month or so. I have used feria brand hair dye and each time it fades back to my natural hair color, blonde. I'm tired of being a blonde and would like to become a brunette. Is there a brand of haircolor that you like to use? What can I do to stop the dye from fading? And is there a problem with using one brand of hair dye and then using a different brand the next time?

-- Contributed by: kayla

Heather -- That sounds like a fascinating and fun look, and I'd recommend trying temporary colors or semi-permanent dyes first just in case it doesn't turn out quite like you'd hoped. Try a slightly darker shade of pink to be sure you cover all your natural color, and then lighten the top for the great contrast. If you're nervous about it, I'd recommend consulting a stylist for their recommendations or to have them do the dye job professionally first. Best of luck!

I want to expriment with unnatural hair colors, and I also have a particular way I have in mind, but I am not sure how it will look with my color hair, or even what product to use, if it should be temporary, semi permeant or what.

What I have in mind is that I want the top layer of my hair like a bleachblond look, and the bottom layer a bright pink. The thing is my hair is between a lightbrown or dirtyblonde look, and I don't know how the colors will turn out.

-- Contributed by: Heather

Abigail - You can cover a darker color with a light dye, no problem, but you may want to check out using hair highlights instead to give your darker hair a brighter look without a complete color change. Otherwise, you'd best see a stylist for their recommendations about what types of color your hair and skin complexion will look best with.

hiya, i want to dye my hair to a light brown, but i have dark hair(how can i do this )

Elizabeth -- Unfortunately, if you don't want to be your natural hair color, the only solution is to continue coloring your hair regularly. There are touch up kits you can use in between overall coloring so you might be able to go a bit longer between the more expensive treatments, though.

I've been blonde for like ever. and this year i went brunette but it faded to blonde again.. and my natural hair colors brown.. but i miss being blonde but i hate dying my hair every 2 months cause oh roots. so what should i do?

I found that the best bleaching kits to use in home are the Jerome Russell " punky color" bleaching kit. It's sort of pricey but well worth it, it leaves your hair soft and manageable not to mention you get your desired shade of "white". It ususally comes with everything you need included. I have found recently that some stores actually provide the developer and sell individual packets of the powder as well.. So you don't have to spend a lot of money each time you need to bleach the hair. I have been personally lucky with my bleaching experiences, I have even used L'oreal highlighting kits as well as Blondissma and have had great results even dying from a black or a red. However, the best by far is the punky color bleaching kit :)

I have an auburn/red/brown hair color, and i really want highlights, but my hair is really natural multi-colored :brown red blond, and i don't want to be really wacky looking if i get the wrong shade.

Amanda -- Black hair is hard to highlight because it is so dark, but it depends on the type of look you're interested in. If you want to be really bold, you can get chunky bright highlights in a blonde or white shade that frame your face, or if you want a more emo or scene style you can get a unique color like a blue, bright red, pink, or purple streak. If you want a more natural look, opt for dark brunette highlights to help lighten and texturize the black. Check out these articles for more information: Hair Highlights and Hair Highlighting Ideas.

Lalaine -- You'll want to look for a hair color that most closely matches your skin color if you're talking about dying facial hair, or that which closely matches your natural hair color. You can also investigate different hair removal processes; many laser hair removal techniques can work with darker skin tones as well.

My skin is brown and got white hairs at 42, can you recommend hair color to dye my hair>

Thank you so much for reading my letter. Respectfully your, Lalaine

Hi Munir,

It can be difficult to lighten dark hair, so it is best attempted by a salon professional. She or he will have access to stronger color-removing products that will give you the color you want, and be able to more accurately assess the damage level of the hair.

Would you recamend vibrant purple as a bottom layer when my hair is a golden brown? I was thinking either purple, black, or bright green.

I use Roux rinse on my hair "Frivolous Fawn" It does wonders at evening off the color, mixture of brown, blonde and grey. My salon can't seem to match the color when it comes to having them do it, and I always return with deep dark brown that eventually fades to my own natural highlighting. This time I need help to get rid of the horrible dark color because the highlighting is just gone. HELP. What can I do? In the future do you have any color that matches frivolous fawn?

r u serious? ppl actually leave hair dye on for 2 hours or overnight? isnt that damaging to ur hair? I want this plum purplish hair color, like the one on ur website.. but i dont want to bleach my hair cuz its so damaging.. is it safer just to leave it on overnight for it to show up? or is that worse then getting ur hair bleached and then applying the color?

I want to use a dark Semi-Permanent onm my hair which has been strip from my usually color. In the past when I have tried it it would turn a light green. Since then I have been going to the salon but this time would like to do it at home. What can I use or do in order for it not to turn light green in some areas.

Hi Chris,

Going from darker to lighter is more difficult in terms of coloring. I would say this would be better attempted by a professional stylist, who will also have access to professional products to remove the dark dye. Good luck!

If you are not sure about permanently dyeing your hair to a non-traditional hair color- try Streekers. (www.streekers.com) It's a fun, temporary hair coloring. It comes in vibrant colors and is not sticky at all. The best part is that it washes out.
