Ezinata - You can try Two Tone Hair Color if you want a stark contrast to your black hair, or you can dye your hair to a brunette shade and add highlights or lowlights. Also check out Removing Black Hair Dye for more tips.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzi dyed my hair black three months ago,but now i want blonde hair or blonde highlights can i do that.
-- Contributed by: Enter your name hereAshlee - If you're confident using the home highlighting kit, you should be able to touch up your roots that way, especially if the contrast isn't too great from your natural or base color. On the other hand, since you've already had some problems dyeing your hair at home, you may want to go to the salon for the best results.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI had my hair highlighted in April to fix my mistake that I made when I dyed my hair too dark. I was wondering if I could use a home highlighting kit to touch up my roots or if it would be best to go to a salon.
-- Contributed by: AshleeHi Trish,
It depends on the look you are going for -- if you want something dramatic-looking, it will work! High-contrast highlights are actually a popular style right now. Here are a few articles with info. and photos that might help:
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyI was thinking of getting highlights. I have dark brown hair and was wondering if blonde highlights would work?
-- Contributed by: trishI have dark blonde hair that is cut in a razored bob (shorter at the back, longer at the sides). I would like some blonde highlights and I am wondering if I can do them at home?
-- Contributed by: PhoenixCharley - Layers lighten up the hair so your natural curl can come through. You'll want to grow your hair out a bit so it will straighten easily, or you may want to consider a sedu straightening iron if you want really straight locks.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzi think layerd hair is cute and i also have highlights too but my hair is so curly since i got it layerd and its makeing me angry how do i keep it stick striate
-- Contributed by: charleySarah - Going so many shades lighter can be challenging; consult a professional stylist with plenty of color experience for their opinion on how to get the color results you're interested in. Be sure it's the right hair color for you as well, and enjoy!
-- Contributed by: Mayntzi have dark brown hair with a tint of red in it how can i highlight my hair to a very light blonde
-- Contributed by: sarahAdrianna - Getting strawberry blonde highlights on top of a darker red shade may be too much of a contrast; I'd recommend going with the highlights and then coordinating Hair Lowlights Shades for more depth and texture. Layers can help show off your new color, but be sure you get a style you like and that looks good on you.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI HAVE DARK BROWN HAIR AND IM THINKING OF HIGHLITING MY HAIR BOTH STRAWBERRY BLONDE AND MAHOGANY RED WILL THIS LOOK FINE ALSO IM THINKING ABOUT GETING LOTS OF LONG LAYERS WILL THIS LOOK FINE WITH MY HAIR COLOR IM WILLING TO GET ?
-- Contributed by: ADRIANNAOlivia - You can try blonde highlights or lowlights, or a subtle red hair highlight. It really depends on what type of brunette your hair color is, as well as what you skin color is. Check out Hair Highlighting Ideas for more options.
-- Contributed by: MayntzHello my hair color is pretty much just plain brunette hair what color highlight would look good with brunette hair i am a teen so nothing to dull okay i hope u can help me thanks for your time
-- Contributed by: OliviaThe Emo Russian - Check out Blonde Hair Highlights for tips on highlighting blonde shades beautifully.
-- Contributed by: MayntzOk well I'm blonde and, well not like pale...but not pink either what color highlight should I get? I am a pretty light blonde
-- Contributed by: the emo RussianBrittany - Coloring your hair and adding highlights can be expensive -- $100 or more -- but prices vary depending on where you live and the salon you choose. Your best estimate would be to call different salons for their prices, but remember it isn't always best to go with the cheapest -- you want to be sure you get a good stylist who is experienced with both coloring and highlighting hair.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzhi i have a few question i want to know how much it would be to get my hair dyed n highlighted n can i get both done the same day i want my hair dyed either black or brown not sure yet n i want to different highlight blonde n like a honey color
-- Contributed by: Brittany Voigti also have dark brown hair and dark features, and ive been looking at alot of different pics and articles about highlights and ive decided im gonna get gold highlights they look amazing in all the pics and im hoping they will look amazing on me lol :~)
-- Contributed by: SarahIf you are on medication, sometimes the color won't take to the hair. This is typical. Depending on the amount of highlighting in your hair, a retouch can also be done as a tint touch-up (using the lighter color on all regrowth). This works best when you have a heavy weave. Of course this may also be dependent upon whether you have used bleach or color. If you have a bleach weave, the stylist will try and re-weave most of the regrown from those sections, but nothing ever looks as good as the first weave or double process (base + highlights). They cannot weave the hair all the way through on a bleach or weave touch-up through due to the overprocessing of bleached hair, which will result in breakage if overlapping should occur. Hope this helps.
-- Contributed by: jess38288ok well i ahve really dark brown hair, and i want highlights, will my nattral hair color come back after a year or so? will it look diffrent? and if i do get them, do u think i should get red ones?
-- Contributed by: moniqueI have dark brown hair and i have all dark features in my face, like dark eyebrows and eyelashes. but i want highlights in my hair but what color should i get????
-- Contributed by: JulieThe color of your highlights depends on more than just your hair color -- you need to take into account your skin color too, so the highlights can look natural. Generally speaking, you'll want highlights that are in the same color family as your natural hair color but are 2-3 shades lighter. Use a couple of different colors of highlights for a nice, blended look. I'd also recommend you visit a stylist for a professional consultation about which colors will look best on you.
-- Contributed by: MayntzMY hair is a chestnut brown color. I want highlights, so what color will look goo with my color hair?
-- Contributed by: Misc.I HAVE BLACK HAIR AND I DONT WANT TO DYE MY HAIR A DIFFERENT COLOR AND I WANT TO PUT HIGHLIGHTS IN IT SO WHAT COLOR HIGHLIGHTS SHOULD I GET?
-- Contributed by: UNKNOWNreally nice
-- Contributed by: anaYou Don't "Hunt" out every single highlighted hair you just do a retouch on the new growth and it will look like its brand new... it doesnt matter if u dont get every piece its not going to be perfect any way you decide to get it done....so don't stress about it
-- Contributed by: Alex D.Its the Fact if you get your hair highlighted in the first place then you should keep up with it no matter what...
-- Contributed by: MegTrina -- There are home touch up kits where you can recolor roots that are growing out darker than the highlight color, or you can ask your stylist to specifically touch up those areas you're concerned about. Yes, it can be touch to hunt out the right sections, but it will give you a more flawless look.
-- Contributed by: MayntzHi I want to touch up my highlights. What I can't figure out, is, how do you get the touchup to match up with the strands of the previously highlighted hair that has grown out an inch or two? I get my hair done at a salon. It mainly looks very good and I get compliments, but it makes me crazy because I see darkness where the previously highlighted pieces are still darker at the top. Are you supposed to touchup those pieces specifically? Are you supposed to hunt and divide the hair to select those pieces. Salons seem to do it SO fast.
Thank you. :)
-- Contributed by: TrinaCeci - Any color treatment can damage hair or dry it out, but it depends on several factors. If you hair is in really good condition right now, you can probably darken your highlights without a problem. Similarly, if your last color treatment was a few weeks ago, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. Use a moisturizing shampoo, a good conditioner, and consider a hot oil treatment or other moisturizing treatment before and after you get new color. That will help protect (before) and restore (after) your hair's moisture.
-- Contributed by: MayntzHi,
I have highlights right now. But I want to go over them with a darker color. Will it dry my hair out?
-- Contributed by: ceciDoing another color treatment right away may damage your hair or dry it out excessively. It's best to wait at least a few days to allow it to recover from the first treatment; you can help it along with some deep conditioning treatments first.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzhi,i just did hilights yest but actually salon person did not do correct ways- it's look like colored hair instead of hilighting...,,, how long i need to wait to recolor it??? can i do next day??

-- Contributed by: KaitlynHi Michelle,
Although the best option is to visit a professional salon, who has access to corrective products and corrective hair color shades, toning solutions may also be available at beauty supply stores for home use. A natural method is to soak hair in milk or heavy cream -- the lactic acid may reduce the brassy appearance. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyHi Jessica,
Many styles are "trendy" right now in terms of highlights. Both dramatic, chunky highlights and natural, more subtle highlights are popular. What type of highlights depends largely on your personal style and what you want to achieve - do you want to frame your face with some highlights and lowlights? Or are you looking for a very bold look with colored highlights? I would suggest browsing pictures to get an idea (check out our main page for our picture galleries, including Pictures of Frosted Hair), and discuss with a professional stylist. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyHI :o) my question is what can I use to tone done highlights that are to brassy thanks
-- Contributed by: MichelleI am 16 years old and i want to do something new with my hair. I dont want to dye it just get highlights and there are some new trends in now i dont know which one to get and to top it off i have curly hair. can u help? Thank you Jessica
-- Contributed by: Jessica MarieHi Paiton,
Although many persons taking preventative medicines highlight and color their hair, it is difficult to say what the effects might be for a given individual. Anything that is ingested into the body has the potential to effect the hair and comes in contact with chemically altering substances. The way the hair reacts to chemicals depends on a wide number of factors, including diet, health, and daily hair care. Since you are concerned, I would recommend asking your physician about any possible side effects the medicines may have in terms of interacting with external hair treatments. Best of luck!
-- Contributed by: Amy Finleygreetings: i am on three different types of blood pressure meds. i have my hair highlighted fully pulled through a cap by my stylist. have there ever been any reports of color allergic reactions with medications? i have not ever heard of that, but wanted to check as i would like to color my hair. thank you for your time.
-- Contributed by: PaitonGreetings! I am on blood pressure medications, and I would like to know if they would interfere or cause sensitivities or any type of reaction when I highlight or color my hair next time. I don't believe it would make any difference as the meds are in my bloodstream. I will really appreciate and look forward to your answer as my roots are getting longer by the day. Thank you..........Paiton
-- Contributed by: paitonCAN YOU USE REGULAR ALUMIUM FIOL FROM YOUR KITCHEN? THANKS BRENDA
-- Contributed by: BRENDA REEEDi agree with ann, we should still do the allergy test, because if it were to touch the sclap there would b a price to pay, any treatment added to the hair, must be Appropriate, libz
-- Contributed by: libbyIt is still a good idea to do the allergy test since the color can still touch your scalp and could cause problems if you are really sensitive.
-- Contributed by: Ann M.hi there, if you are getting your hair highlighted using a cap, do you still have to do an allergy test? the color does not touch the scalp or run, like foils can. thank you....
