Ashlee - If you have very dark hair, lowlights wouldn't be very visible. You'd probably do better to get some highlights that can brighten up your shade, and auburn would be a great choice. You might also consider shades like chestnut or honey, depending on how bright you want to go. Generally it's best to stick to 2-3 shades lighter than your base color, but if you want to go bolder you can certainly consider brighter colors.

I have dirty blonde hair, and getting a shorter haircut. I'm getting highlights and lowlights. Any idea for colors?

I have dark brown hair, some people mistake it for black. I was thinking about getting some lowlights, but I'm not sure what color would look the best. I was hoping to get an auburn color, but I'm still not sure! What color do you think I should get?

Kristin - If you choose a dark enough overall shade, that will cover a lot of the lowlights so you don't need to worry about it. The initial base color will even out the shades.

Hi! I have dirty blonde hair that is highlighted on the top and lowlighted on the bottom... i want to go dark all over, with lowlights but i dont know how messed up it will look with my grown out lowlights on top. Help??!!??

Hi i have light golden blonde hair that is highlighted. Before that i tried to dye my own hair and used lemon. It is naturally brown or dark blonde underneath. I am trying to figure out if i should go dark and if so wat shade? I have fair skin also. Need help!

Judy - You can do a blend of dark and light, but I wouldn't recommend anything too stark. Stick to just a couple of shades lighter or darker, and it should blend in well.

I have dark brown hair and I have it hilight with the foli method. My colorist bleaches and color out and puts no toner. I have been doing this sence I am 16, I am now 44. I want a bit of a change. I have been letting it grow out and actually like the contrast where it is at. I am thinking if I should eventually dye it back to my brown color and put lo-lights? Any suggestion for a 44 year old. I have only a few stray strands of grey.

Hi Roz, The color selections apply to natural hair, but take into consideration the specific look you are going for - if you are looking for a very dramatic look, deep lowlights and contrasting highlights are an option. Alternately, if it's a very subtle natural a look you want, go for lowlight shades closer to your natural color. These articles might also be helpful:

Precious - The best way to highlight the roots is to first dye them to match the base color of the rest of your hair, then highlight as normal. If you just highlight over the gray, the color will appear different and the blending won't be as natural.

Hi, I have a question it's been hard for me to research via the internet. I have alot of gray hair roots in my frontal area of my hair and I have recently highlighted my hair, which by the way looks very nice. I want to know how do I highlight my gray roots?
