Kaela - You will first want to be sure your hair is conditioned properly; dry hair has more frizz. Use a good quality conditioner, and drink plenty of water to keep it moisturized from within. Then, you may want to try a smoothing serum to tame it down a bit. Using heating tools less can also help - the more heat you apply to your hair, the more you can damage it. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzMy hair is SUPER frizzy and wavy.. i straighten it every night and morning to keep it straight.. but it rains often which makes it curl up and puff out again!! help me!1
-- Contributed by: Kaela :DKristina - You may want to investigate smoothing serums and other anti-frizz products to help tone down your poufy hair. Also, check out our Curly Hair article for tips on making the most of your natural curls without straightening.
-- Contributed by: MayntzLucy - If you want to try some layers to help thin out your thick hair, be aware that they will add some volume to your look and could emphasize the waves you have. You can keep a long layer on the top to help weigh your hair down if that's the look you're interested in.
-- Contributed by: MayntzMy hair is super thick and full of natral curls. i try to keep it straightened but its very humid where i live and it just frizzes worse or poofs out. Please help me!!
-- Contributed by: Kristinai have really thick hair and its really wavy in the middle and straight on the bottom and just kinda both on top so i was wondering whats the best hair for me to get and i would really like to get it thined out a bit but i dont know how much so could you please help me!:)
-- Contributed by: lucyLindsey, Try using a salon quality root lifter, such as Matrix Amplify Root Lifter. Another option you might want to consider is a texturizing product, which will add depth without weighing the hair down. -- Contributed by: Amy FinleyI have thick (can only get a pony tail holder around it twice) blond hair. It's straight on top and slightly wavy underneath. I have it cut straight across, mid-back length. I love the length, the problem I have is that it's very flat on the top because of the weight. I would love nice big curls/waves, but I know that a perm probably would not hold. I haven't had much luck with layers in the past and I like to keep things low maintenance. I'm considering cutting the hair to taper towards my face. I'm also considering your hairspray suggestion. I don't usually use styling products, but I'm tired of the flat hair. Could you recommend a product that would give my hair, especially the roots, some volume and not darken my hair (as a blond I find that a lot of products do that). Feedback on haircuts and perms would be welcome too :)
-- Contributed by: LindseyMolly - Instead of trying to fight your hair, you might want to try Cute Haircuts for Curly Hair or other styles that can work with your hair texture. If you do still want to straighten your hair, be sure to use smoothing serum to help it stay straight during the day.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzhey, well my hair is natually curly and i get really down about it as when i straighten it half way through the day it will go wavey, i am getting my hair cut tomorow 19th/2 and i was woundering for advice what to have ? help me :S
-- Contributed by: mollyRebecca - You might want to try a choppy bob haircut that can have a little wave but will lighten up your hair. You can personalize the look with color, length, adding a bang, or doing whatever you'd like to make it your own.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI want a short but cute Look. I have wavy hair but i like to straighten it alot so i need your help
-- Contributed by: RebeccaEmily - Inverted Bob Hair is a great look, but it can be a drastic change if you're not sure about it. You might want to try some simple layers to give your look a subtle change, and if you like that you can work on something more drastic without feeling like you have to take the plunge all at once.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI have very thick hair and right now i am planning on getting it cut but im not quite sure which hair style to go to... I had it in a bob like Rhianna like where the back is shorter.. now my hair is to my shoulders and i can decide if i should go short or stay long..
-- Contributed by: EmilyRachel - You can try a smoothing serum to help keep your hair silky and sleek, or you can opt for Sedu straightening that will help keep it under control. Layers can also help keep a shorter style from getting too much volume, but be sure to keep the topmost layer (from the crown) as the longest for the best control.
-- Contributed by: MayntzCeri - You may want to try straightening your hair with a quality Sedu iron. That can help tame the frizz and make your hair more controllable. Also be sure to use a good conditioner and keep your hair moisturized to help keep it manageable. If you do those things, layers can help thin out your hair for a shorter style more easily, or you can embrace the volume with a stacked cut or inverted bob hair.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzi have very thick hair but i want to cut it pixie short? is there any way this is possible without having my hair puff out?
-- Contributed by: RachelI have really thick and frizzy wavy hair that is down to the bottom of my back. I can't wear it down because it's too bushy and triangular but I can't wear it up because it is too frizzy so it spends most of its time in two plaits.I really want to get it cut, I would like it to be a lot shorter with a side parting and fringe. But shorter hair means that it will be even more puffy. Everyone suggests layers to me but they just make my hair more triangular and full of volume. What can I do?
-- Contributed by: CeriKayleigh - That sounds like it would work to add volume to your hair without weighing it down, but be sure to check out Hairstyle for Shape of Face to be sure it will work with your features as well. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzAs far as thick hair goes, the hair itself on my head is thick (Asian hair) and it's not that I have a lot of hair.. it's that it's thick. Would a style with thick bangs and volume moreso on the top and it gets thinner and more layered towards the bottom work ok?
-- Contributed by: KayleighMeg - Layers can help thin out your hair, and Inverted Bob Hair is certainly a great look to try for your situation. The longer front layers will help thin your cheeks, but the shorter hair in back should help relieve some of the tension on your scalp that causes headaches. Also check out Images of Inverted Bob Hairstyle for variations on this trendy look. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzRegina - You can get layers added that will help thin your hair, and you can keep the topmost layer as the longest to help weigh down your style. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: Mayntzhello....I am one of those women who get headaches from my long thick hair. I have tried getting a short cut (bob) but I tend to get mushroom head. I have an oval face with big cheeks and a small forhead. i would like to get an asymetrical bob but am worried about the afore-mentioned mushroom affect. any suggestions?
-- Contributed by: MegMy hair is naturally thick and very dark. I love short hairstyles, but the thickness of my hair always adds too much volume. Are there any ways I can make my hair look thinner so a short hair cut turns out well and I don't come out looking like a giant cotton ball dipped in oil lol.
-- Contributed by: ReginaShelley - I'd suggest some layers for your daughter's hair. That will help thin it out a bit so it is more manageable, and you'll want to be sure her hair is conditioned properly to help keep it from tangling so much. A leave-in conditioner will help keep the knots to a minimum.
-- Contributed by: MayntzAnisah - You can try using two ponytail holders; one very strong, plain one to hold your hair, and the other more decorative to go on top and conceal the functional one. That way, you don't have to break the nice ones and your hair will be held securely.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzhello.every one.I have a 13 year old daughter who has verry THICK hair.It is verry long verry dry and it gets verry knotty easly..she hasint had a hair cut in about a years time...She sed she dose not like to get hair cuts becase the hair dresers all ways tell her that she has verry long and thick hair then she gets really up set.i was just woundering what hair cut she could get and what i could say to the hair dresers ,,plz can someone giv me some advice.thanx
-- Contributed by: Shelleyyea the ponytail can become a problem because, my hair is so thick that sometimes i can't wrap the ponytail holder around it enough times before it snaps in half..:( any suggestions??
-- Contributed by: AnisahHi Emily, A good hair dresser can use thinning shears to help cut down on the volume of your hair. An oval face shape looks great with many styles, and there are some fabulous sedu styles you could try with straight hair. Check out our Sedu How To Guide for tips. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyHi Kassie, I would suggest investing in a good quality leave in conditioner that contains natural ingredients. There are also a number of anti-frizz serums on the market today that work well for coarse/very curly hair types. Also - try not to blow dry your hair, just let it dry naturally. If you're in a pinch, a casual updo can be an easy solution to keep hair out of the way -- and the 'messy' style is popular, so no worries about a few stray hairs!
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyHi Kelly: Congrats on going to business school and here are some suggestions. If you're in a pinch, a low ponytail can actually look very professional. Use a simple clip or holder and wear it at the base of the neck rather than the back of the head or up high. There are also many simple updos that will look professional and allow you to keep your length. Wavy hair is actually very popular right now, so if you wear it down, check out some of the product reccommendations and styling tips from celebrity stylist Chris Michalak in our Styling Tips for Wavy Hair interview. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyI would really appreciate some advice! I am 18 years old and I have probably worn my hair in a pony tail for the past 10 years. My hair is about half way down my back and it is extremely poofy and wavy. I've tried every hair product, blow drying trick, and layering technique possible. It currently takes me 40 min to straighten my hair to wear it down. I am going to a private university in the fall and have to dress in business attire every day...and I don't think a ponytail looks very professional or grownup. I still want to have hair past my shoulders, but I do not want to have a "bell" head. I could really use any advice right now.
-- Contributed by: Kellyi have really thick and curly hair that i have at little less than shoulder length. I pin it back on the sides becuase other wise i have a huge afro and its not fun at all. This summer im going to be at a farm for most of the time and i wont want to mess with it in the bobby pins all day. Is there a way i can have my hair so i can just leave it out of the bobby pins and not have it get all poofy and frizzy on me? Im 14 years old so i want a hairstyle that guys my age would fine nice, not like a "grown up" haistyle. If anyone could help i would really, really, really appriciate it.
-- Contributed by: KassieI have extremely thick hair! It's nice and everything, but very hard to work with. I would like my hair short, but it was way too much volume for that, and I don't think it would look flattering with a delicate oval face. Even though it's naturally straight, it is still quite overhwelming and difficult to deal with, especially early in the morning!
Are there any particular hairstyles that will help lighten my hair a bit and make it look a bit more (and I hate to use this term) normal? I need something younger looking, too.
Thanks for everything! I appreciate it.
-- Contributed by: EmilyHi, I need some advice. My natural hair is a thcik, frizzy, curly, afro. However, I got it chemically straightened and never plan to go back. Although my hair is "straight", it is still extremely thick and poofy. I am constantly advised to grow it out so it is long, but its not the hair I desire. (It's currently a bit past shoulder length). However, by keeping my hair long, that only means I have more and more hair to work with. It also makes it noticable to just how dry my hair is.
I've been thinking about getting it cut short, with interesting layers for a sort of punk look. But before I risk anything, I would greatly appreciate your advice/insight.
-- Contributed by: KimberlyEmma - It sounds as if you just have wavy, not truly curly, hair. If you want to emphasize the curls you do have, I'd recommend going a bit shorter so the hair isn't as heavy and will rebound better. Adding a few layers can also lighten the hair and let the curls wind up more naturally. You may actually be using too many products that can weigh hair down, and too many products will cause damage over time. Be sure to keep your hair healthy and the curls may be stronger.
-- Contributed by: MayntzAlriight. I have thick, curly hair. Right now it drops down a little past my shoulders, but I have always encountered a problem. My 'curls' (as to say) are too loose, and barely look like curls or ringlets themselves. In fact, I have to use three products to make it look somewhat decent, and I am still not satisfied with the results. If I brush this hair of my own, my curls fall out into hideous waves, and it looks damaged although I have not dyed it or done much to damage it all.
I'm not into growing it long, because in the mornings I don't want to bother with it. Right now I'm even breaking down with shoulder-length hair. My mother tried short hair, and she has the same type of hair and thickness as I do, and it's not the look I'm going for.
Any ideas?
-- Contributed by: EmmaKathrine - I'd recommend getting some long layers that can help weigh it down so it isn't poufy, but you should be able to grow it long and gorgeous. -- Contributed by: Mayntzi have very thick hair and its up to my shoulders. I also have heart shaped face. I have a lot of hair plus its thick!!! Most people say short but i would like to grow my hair longer...what hairstyle would you recommend for me???
Alice - A bob hair style can be fun and easy to take care of, and so can an inverted bob. Just let your stylist know that you don't want to spend a lot of time caring for it and they can help give you a style you'll like that's easy to care for.
-- Contributed by: MayntzOh my gosh.... I am donating my hair to Locks of Love. I, too, am uncertain about what kind of cut to get. I have (currently) have long, thick, blonde hair. I was thinking about a bob, but I don't wnat to have to spend to much time on it every day.
Good luck!
Alice
-- Contributed by: AliceJillian - There shouldn't be any reason you can't get an inverted bob -- check out Inverted Bob Hair for the many options the style has that you can try.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI have super thick blonde hair. Everyone thinks its beautiful...i like it alot too...but soon I am going to be cutting it short to send in for locks of love (second time)
but all i have ever had as for hair styles was SHORT, MEDIUM, LONG (CUUUT) SHORT MEDIUM LONG
im turning 16 soon...and i want a style for once. but i have no clue how i can cut it and still have it look nice. every style i see is for thin hair. can anyone help me? i need something that i dont have to fuss with every morning though. Just brush it and be done.
i was thinking about getting an "inverted bob". thats what the hair stylest said. but that dream was crushed when she said i was going to have to play with it.
any ideas???
-- Contributed by: JillianSaranara - I'd suggest adding layers and taking off some length to help lighten your hair. The results can be dramatic, even if it isn't much shorter.
-- Contributed by: MayntzReeja - You can get waves put into your hair; it's a type of light perm but be sure the stylist understands what you are interested in. Also, check out Sedu Celebrity Hair Styles for ideas on making a straight style red carpet fabulous!
-- Contributed by: Mayntzi have really thick hair and i want to get a new haircut. I want something that will make it weigh less because i have like three heads of hair! :) my hair is long now but its do boring for me i want different lengths and i have side bangs but i ond know what to do with them? can you help me?
-- Contributed by: saranarai have very thick hair and im getting sick and tired of a plain straight haircut..if i have it in layers it will have fly-aways..i want a new haircut but the haircuts i want are most often suitable for those with thin hair..any advice?
-- Contributed by: reejaSabrina - Layers can help loosen your hair, or you can look for a style you like that you don't have to straighten. If you grow your hair longer, that will also help weigh it down and keep it more manageable, but very heavy hair can cause scalp irritation, migraines, and other problems in some people.
-- Contributed by: MayntzLike someone has said before my hair is THICK. I even went to a hairdresser who does hairs for professional runway shows and she said with hair as thick as mine the only thing you can do is wash several hours before you decide to go out so it will come down and use a ceramic straightner. I still can't find a hairstyle that doesnt look like crap. Any advice?
-- Contributed by: SabrinaMichelle - You might try a layered hair style to remove some of the thickness without making your hair shorter. That can help make it more manageable for you.
-- Contributed by: MayntzThe women on this page that are showing off there "thick" hair, don't really have thick hair at all compared to me. Mine's thicker than thick. Whenever I want to where it down, I can never keep it out of my face, and spray doesn't work either because it just makes my hair tangly and feeling gross. I'm 16 and have worn my hair in a bun for the past 2 years not knowing what to do with it. My friends all have there hair down and I want mine down too. What can I do?
-- Contributed by: MichelleCaitlin - You could try a shorter look like a bob or shag, or you can opt for layers to give your shoulder length hair more bounce and movement. -- Contributed by: MayntzHi, I have really thick hair and it's shoulder length, I have no idea what to do with my hair. I was thinking of buying a straightener, but I have straight hair, would it make my hair any thinner? Everyday I either put my hair in a ponytail or a bun...so what should I do, please send pictures if you can.
-- Contributed by: CaitlinLiz - Hair Accessories can work wonders with your hair type, and you can also try braids or a French Twist for a sleek, manageable look.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzsay you have thick, long, semi-wavy hair is there any other style other than long layers?
-- Contributed by: LizHey, I have thick straight hair and I'm not sure what the best short/bob type hair cut would be..
(pictures would be great)
-- Contributed by: DanaEmily - Your best bet would be to try layers to remove some of the thickness. That will add volume, though, so you'll probably want to leave the topmost layer (starting at the crown) as the longest one so it can help keep the hair weighed down a bit and keep it straighter to start. Since your hair is naturally curly, you'll need to investigate how to straighten it without damaging it -- these articles can help: Hair Straightening, Hair Straightener, Sedu Hair Styles.
-- Contributed by: MayntzI have thick curly hair and would like to change the style to something more straighter and not so thick please help me
-- Contributed by: emilyLily - You can go for a shorter look but just don't go too short -- consider medium length hair instead. You can also add layers to lighten your hair and make it better to wear in the heat without sacrificing too much length. Enjoy!
-- Contributed by: Mayntzi have thick hair (imagine why i am reading this), i really need to cut it short... (marching band in over 100 degree weather), the last time i cut it short i looked like a boy with an awful haircut (my brothers said i looked like Ron Weasly from the harry potter movies), i am afraid to cut my hair again like that, but i also dont want to die at marching camp... HELP?!
