Taylor - Layers can help lighten your hair and give it more movement since it won't be as heavy, but they can be difficult to grow out if you get too many. Try just a light layering first to see if you like how your hair looks and feels with layers.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

Emmy - You've got the right idea with having the top layer be the longest so it will help weigh down your hair. Layers should also help thin out the volume you have at the ends. Be sure to chat with your stylist before they start cutting so they know exactly what you're looking for!

I have thick straight medium length hair and am getting a hair cut soon I am in a thought prosess wondering if I should get layers or not. Any tips?

-- Contributed by: Taylor

I have quite thick, shoulder-length curly hair, and I have the bell look going on which I want to get rid of before I start college, so I'm thinking of getting layers. But I'm scared of them turning out wrong too - how many should I have? I was thinking 2 or 3 with the top layer ending just after my chin, but I'm a complete novice when it comes to hair styling - any tips would be great :)

-- Contributed by: Emmy

Julie - Lizzie's right, you should just give it a shot if you're interested in layers. They can take awhile to grow out, but they are really versatile and will help tone down the volume of your hair. Best wishes!

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

I have thick curly black hair and decided to get layers on a fluke when I was donating my hair but it really was one of the best things I did so I would say give it a try and see how it goes. It helps to stick some mousse in your wet hair and just let it dry into ringlets if your hair is curly. You might not even need mousse if your hair behaves. Good luck!!!

i want layers, but im scared they might turn out ugly on my hair.. i got black thick hair, and mostly all the time i straighten it. my mom is thinking of cutting it herself, because she is going to hair school and she thinks she can create layers for me

Hi em, You may want to consider choppy layers if you're looking for something more dramatic than the subtle layers you currently have. You might also want to see these articles for more ideas: Short Haircut Makeover, Short Choppy Hairstyles, Galleries of Layered Hair Cuts.

I've got hair which is not dark or light brown. Its kind of in the middle. I got layers but they don't show very well. I want to get my hair cut with layers but I don't want it to be impracticle. I think I want it shorter because its now past my shoulders but I don't want it too short. grief, I'm picky. I currently have it in a left parting but I don't mind changing. Any suggestions? If I'm too picky i'm open to suggetions because I just want to change my hair. thanks

-- Contributed by: em

Alyssa - You can try going with a medium style instead of a longer look, or you could get a slight perm to add some curl or wave to your look. If you don't want a drastic change, consider just getting some highlights or lowlights to add a touch of different color without changing your style. You'd be surprised at how different it can look!

i have hair like the brunette in the first picture. ive had it like that for like 3 and 1/2 yrs. its cute. but i want something different. but im scared to change my hair style. any suggestions? (i dont like short hair)

Glad you found the site useful, Amy, thanks!

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

You helped MUCH better than other websites!! Thanks.

-- Contributed by: Amy

Crissy - You can find hair style pictures of what you like and take them to your stylist so they can see what you mean, even if you can't describe it too well. Take several different pictures for different angles, and discuss with them what you do and don't like about each picture before your next cut. Best wishes!

Hi, I've been wanting a new haircut for a while, and I do not know how to explain exactly how i want it to the stylist. It always ends up the way i hoped it wouldnt and i want to have fun with it...an emo look, to ne exact. HELP

-- Contributed by: Crissy

It's great to hear everyone's experiences with layers; keep the tips coming!

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

I have had a short layered style (bob-esque), it was really good for framing my face (sort of heart-shaped), easing weight off my head due to thick, coarse, straight hair and making my cheekbones stand out. Personally, I found it low-maintenance, and would definitely recommend layers.

-- Contributed by: Danni

I just got my layers yesterday! I love them! they also make my hair feel alot lighter because i use to have thicker hair before! And they look really cool!

-- Contributed by: Sofia

I had layer, then i decided to grow out my hair. Now that it's getting longer i cant wait to have long long hair with layers!!

-- Contributed by: Holly

I have layers and I'm 12 years old. I love my layers! I just got them yesterday. If you get them they will make your hair look so much thicker and fuller.

-- Contributed by: Emily

I have layers and im 11. I like them a lot. My hair is a lot fuller if u tell ur dad that u want to try something new and tell him all the benefits of layers maybe he'll let u have some. Also tell him that u know an 11 year old that has layers!

-- Contributed by: Ashley

Maddie, Some subtle layers can be a great look for a girl your age. They add some fullness and can also make hair easy to style without a lot of fuss. You may want to visit a salon and show your Dad pictures of what you like. You may want to go for blended layers rather than disconnected layers (which are more dramatic).

-- Contributed by: Amy Finley

gosh im 12 and i still cant find any thing. write now i have scene hair but im getting tierd of it. maddi you can be any age to have you hair in layers just explain to ur dad that it makes ur hair fuller. it lookmsgreeat

-- Contributed by: sydney

I really want to get my hair layered as i feel it is currently very boring. Is there any advice to how old you should be because my dad says i'm still too young. I'm 12. Any advice would be helpful...THANKS!

-- Contributed by: Maddie!

hi, i have been looking through a couple of websites for layered hair and i have found on (this one) and i printed off the hair style and showed it to my local hairdresser and she did it for me and to be honest with you i loved it. my hair is long and brown.

-- Contributed by: Megan

im getting my hair cut soon. I have a round face shape and i have quite long hair. i want to put short layers in but will it look alright with long hair and short layers?

-- Contributed by: Emma

I so agree that layering is not the answer for short wavy hair! Young hairstylists of today need to learn how to cut with the natural wave of the hair. THANKS!

-- Contributed by: Anneliese

I just got a layered hairstyle.. but i seriously don't like it because my hair is annoyingly thick and curly, so it makes the top part look HUGE, and bigger than the bottom. I really really want the top part to grow, is there anything i can do? School starts soon and i can't manage my hair.

-- Contributed by: Robin

Hi Sarah, If you are currently blow-drying your hair, I would suggest letting it air dry instead to keep the volume down. You may also want to try one of the smoothing or anti-frizz serums available in most drug stores and salons. Even if your hair isn't curly, it can help control your hair a bit better and make it smoother. This article also has a couple of style tips for thick hair: Short Hairstyles for Thick Wavy Hair.

I have very thick hair and have lots of layers which make my hair very poufy, especially on the top and back of my head. I knowt hat I need to grow the layers out, but is there anything else I can do in the meantime to control the pouf?

Hi Naiomi, There are some great ideas for long layered styles on these articles: Long Layered Hair Styles, Layered Hair Cuts with Pictures, Long Hair Style Picture Gallery. Or, check out some quick and easy hairstyle ideas for medium to long hair.

-- Contributed by: Amy Finley

My hair is really really long, what kind of layer style would be good for me? I just want something thats easy to manage and looks good as well.. any ideas or suggestions? thankz

-- Contributed by: Naiomi

Lyndsey - You can taper the ends so they are still long but shorten the hidden layers to give your style more bounce. Also consider a slight flip on the ends for a more flirty, swingy look.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

I have longer that sholder lengh hair, I would like to cut a layer in it, so that it has more swing a the bottom, How do I do this myself. thanks

-- Contributed by: lyndsey

Nicole - Emma is right, you'll need to grow out the layers to keep your hair from being quite so frizzy and full. Consider a smoothing serum to help tame frizz, and be sure your hair is properly conditioned and moisturized (dry hair is naturally frizzier). Keep the topmost layer the longest to help weigh hair down so it isn't so full, and opt for a ponytail or head band as an easy, manageable style. Best wishes!

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

note: i have really curly hair and getting layers makes it even more poofy i suggest growing the layers out and it gives your hair a flatter less frizzy/poofy look but still with volume

-- Contributed by: Emma

On every site I have been it I've read that slight layers are great for curly hair, but this page on the site it making me think the exact opposite and I am just so frustrated with my curly hair always being frizzy and sometimes being half curly half wavy and my biggest annoyance is that it is huge, I have soo much hair I don't know what to do with it. I just really getting sick of the bell shape thats my forms .Any tips would be great.Thanks.

-- Contributed by: Nicole

Dreg - Yes, layering will help give hair more mobility so it can float easily like many skaters' styles, but if the hair is already poufy, be aware that layers may add too much volume to the look.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

Is layering useful for poofy hair to get that skater look ?

-- Contributed by: Dreg

Emily - If you want to show off your layers, try getting Hair Highlights or adding Hair Lowlights Shades to your style for texture and depth. That will really accentuate the layers without drastically changing your style.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

I need ideas of what to do with my layered hair to bring out the look of the layers. You can barely tell I have them

-- Contributed by: Emily

Thanks Guys you helped me heaps

-- Contributed by: Gigi

Gigi - Look for a lighter product to use, or consider using just a frizz control spray or spritz for a little control without weighing your hair down.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

Hey, I have layered hair but I dont know what to do... my frindge always sticks up and when i put product in it it goes greasy straight away.... Can you help

Gigi

-- Contributed by: Gigi

this is for you lily, I have long, THIN hair, and I have layers. The same with my cousin, we got it done together. It looks great! I love it, so go for the layers. If your haircutter can't do go somewhere else. I reccomend SportCuts! They did MINE!!!

-- Contributed by: someone

Lily - You can try layers to add volume, or keep your hair longer and use a volumizing mousse or spritz on the roots. Your best bet to communicate with your stylist is to find pictures you like and show them how you'd like your hair cut. You can also consider adding some Hair Highlights for texture and depth without adding volume.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

I have long hair but would like alot of layers to make my hair lighter so it doesnt lie so flat and get oily so fast. I want it to look natural and kinda boho. do you have any tips that i can tell my hairdresser because last time i went to get a trim and asked about it she said that she couldnt do it. i have very fine blonde hair.

-- Contributed by: lily

Eva - You can try a sedu hair style to help tame your layers, or grow the very top layer to be longer so it can help weigh down the others. That will take time, of course, but in the meantime you can also try to control frizz with a stronger conditioner and a smoothing serum.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

i hate my layers i love straight thin hair i have the opposite so i got layers to thin it out and ya that works but all the layers flip out like a mullet

-- Contributed by: eva

Katherine - A short shag hair style or a bob hair style might be just what you're looking for. You can also try braids for an easy but elegant look.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

Sometimes it looks cute if you flip in your top layer in a little, and then keep the bottem layer straight! trust me it works!

-- Contributed by: Maggie

I have a problem with my hair. I love the long look and during the summer i thought i would change it up and cut it all off! its growing but i just wish it could be longer! I also dont like having my hair down anymore and i really want some cute new styles with the hair up and out of my face.. do you have any advise????

-- Contributed by: Katherine

Layers do take some maintenance, but they also can give much more shape to a hairstyle than a blunt cut.

-- Contributed by: Ann M.

i have layers and unless you're going to keep up with them and cut them at least once every 6 months, then don't get them. they're alot of work!

-- Contributed by: Nicole Marie

hey i am going to get my hair cut and i have no idea what layered style i want and ideas?

-- Contributed by: katelynn

haha.i hecka want to dye my hair like brown.its blonde right now.i love the color of the girl in the first pictures' hair.so adorableeee. :]

-- Contributed by: kay-jay

I'd recommend going to a stylist and explaining the type of look you want -- they can help you coordinate a trendy style that suits your face shape, hair length, and how you want to care for it. Adding layers may help you give more texture to the look and will seemingly "shorten" your face, though you want to be sure not to wear your hair too long beneath your jawline. Best of luck!

I have a grown out cheryle burke hairstyle, but since i have a high forehead and a oblong and with roundeness to my face it looks really bad cus my bangs are grown out and i have been trying to part them but it just makes my head so long! i need help, please give me a link to a funky, punky, not too short but layered which trendy. i need help

-- Contributed by: jetandar ...awat

Kay-Jay: That's a tapered, layered style with long offcenter bangs. You can take the picture to a stylist to see if they can duplicate it or give you a similar look. It will work best on oval-shaped faces, and with straight hair. Best of luck!

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

doode.how do you get your hair like the girl in the first pictureee?its so cuteee=]

-- Contributed by: kay-jay

Ashley - You can go punk with any type of hair depending on what you'd like to do with it. Try an outrageous color or a heavy contract (very dark highlights if you have blonde hair, for example), or you can use hair gel or other products to help even thin hair keep a sculpted style. Check out Punk Hair Styles, Punk Hair Gallery, Punk Hair Style Pictures, Punk Hair Ideas and Mohawk Hair Gallery for ideas.

I want to have a layered punk hairstyle but my hair is too thin. What punk hairstyles are there for thin hair?

-- Contributed by: ashley

Shelby -- A good way to help weigh down layers is to keep the very top layer as the longest one; that way it will help keep the rest under control. Straightening is another option, yes, but it can stress out your hair if you do it every single day, and depending on the local humidity it may not be completely effective. Try longer layers and add a bit of smoothing hold serum to them when you style for the best results.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

A while ago I layered my hair but it it was very poofy. I want to layer it but not if it does that. Is there any way I can stop it? Would straightening it in the morning stop it? Or would it just come back later in the day?

-- Contributed by: Shelby

What about Lace wigs that these stars use? Any advice?

-- Contributed by: Angie

Jessie -- Layers will actually help thin out thick hair, so it would be possible, though if your hair is very thick the end result may have more volume.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

this hair style is so cute but, her hair looks very thin can you pull this off with thick hsir?

-- Contributed by: jessie

your website has helped me a lot. When it comes to my hair. and i wanted to thank you guys.

-- Contributed by: courtney

Layers can really make curly hair have a lot more volume -- even too much, if that's not the style you're interested in. You might try keeping the topmost layer as the longest to help weigh the hair down, and only do a few layers that will be easier to grow out if you don't like the look.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

Here's the thing iv'e always had long hair iv'e gotten layers before i guess that would be the long layered look, but i want to try something diffrent for a change. I love the look of layers all around the face, but can they do that with long straight hair.

-- Contributed by: Netta

Curly hair may be tough to have layered -- it could really make it frizzy or too poufy. To try to keep it under control, keep the top layer longer so it can help weigh down the style, and only use a small number of layers in case you decide you don't like the style; it will be easier to grow out.

-- Contributed by: Mayntz

Hey, I am thinking about getting my hair layered. The thing is that my hair is curly. Do you people think I should still get it layered? My hair is a little below the shouldder and pretty curly? Help me people I've never had my hair done!

-- Contributed by: Dee

Ok well here's the thing, I got my hair layered once and i liked it but it really poofed out alot and it made my hair curlier than it was before I got the layers. I have always hade natural curls in my hair but i didn't think that they were supposed to look like that because they had never done that before so i started straightening my hair with a straightner that i bought at Walmart and my hair got fried from it. i like the look that it has but i don't want to ruin my hair, do you have any suggestions???

-- Contributed by: Beth

Hi! I am probably getting layers for my 13th birthday the problem is that I am not sure layers will work with my hair. It is short deadly straight, some volume and very soft. If I get layers will it fade and look like a salon mistake because it looks choppy or what?

-- Contributed by: natalie

Hey,

I cut my hair a month ago. It was long (to between my sholder blades), and layered. So I wanted to take the layers out because it was long enough where i could. So i told my hairdresser to take out the layers, and showed her that i wanted it to the top of my shoulders with a long bang that would swoop to the side. She cut it to above my sholders to where some of my neck was bare and a little bang. I looked like i belonged in the 50s or in the movie chicago. Its a bob, and that isn't what i wanted. So i stuck it out and it grew a little bit, but the problem is that it is so heavy on the bottom because it is one straight cut. I was thinking putting layers back in but iim afraid that it would be to short. What should i do?

Eight years ago A beautician melted my hair by bleaching a week after she had permed me and I had pits in my head and since then I have never been able to get a perm because my hair is so dry, I have to use a conditioner every time I shampoo or I can't comb out my hair. Is there anything that can be done to help my hair or put moisture back into it? Thank You, Judi

Kelly, When you blow dry it, try just turning the ends under a little with a round brush - that will help smooth it out. Then, when you get your hair done next time, tell them you want to grow out the heavy layering and just have very light, subtle layers. It will take a couple cuts / few months as you get some growth in what is currently your shorter layers, but you should be able to get it to where you want it without too much pain and suffering. :)

I recently had my hair layered. It's a long layered look. first layer starts just above my chin. I have lite bangs and she cut the hair around my face (bang meets first layer. I haven't had my hair layered in about 15 years. I was a bit disappointed because it looks so choppy. When I curl it it looks good, but if I just blow dry it, it looks like crap. I just read that there are different types of layers (i didn't know this. I guess I want it to look more blended and even layers. what can I do to correct this?
