What do u use to seal the ends, when only braiding just alittle bit of the hair
-- Contributed by: rebecca francisJaylan - Parting by hand is the best way, since you can adjust for the shape of the head and the thickness of the hair. If you're having trouble doing it yourself, seek out an experienced stylist to put in your micros.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzhow would u part hair to create good almost perfect micros
-- Contributed by: jaylanGlad to help, Nya!
-- Contributed by: MayntzJami - If you just got the micros, you'll need to have them taken out before you get your hair layered or cut, otherwise it's really hard to tell how long the hair actually is.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzi just got micro braids and the hair is too long and too thick is it possible for me to get it layered and cut shorter but still look nice?
-- Contributed by: jamithank you for sharing this because i am getting my hair braided in about a week and i wanted to know how to prep my hair for it.so thanks again
-- Contributed by: nyaThank you for sharing your experience, Cassandre!
-- Contributed by: MayntzLiana - With such fine braids as micros, it can take several hours to remove them. The best way (and the way that will damage the hair least) is to let a stylist do it, preferably one who is very experienced with African American hair and micro braids. Otherwise, you can gently unwrap them one by one, clipping the undone hair out of the way as you go to prevent tangles. A good conditioner or detangler applied to the braids will also help the process.
-- Contributed by: Mayntzits true braids will ruin you hair if you dont take care of them . I had my hair done every 3 monthes and my hair was kept in braids for 4 years
After i took them out for graduation I realized my hair was a mess. I t had gotten split ends and had gotten unbelievably damaged. Be sure to take care of your braids-- Contributed by: cassandre coles
How do you get the braids OUT once you're ready to have them out? My Aunt got braids done while in the Dominican and how can not get her hair un-braided? Any hints?
-- Contributed by: LianaQuincey - Tight braids that are left in for a long time can be damaging to any hair type. Be sure you use a good Conditioner to keep your hair healthy, and treat the braids well. Your hair texture isn't as brittle and won't break as well, but it can still be a problem if they're not cared for. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzI'm getting microbraids done on the 28th and I'm white. I was wonderin if it would be different in my hair. For example would it damage more or anything like that?
-- Contributed by: QuinceyJustin, You're correct -- regular rubber bands are damaging. Some hair accessory manufacturers are making 'no damage' elastics in various sizes that can hold styles without the damage of rubber bands or the metal connectors on standard elastics. Certain hair products, like pastes and waxes, can also hold the ends of braids in place of bands. As far as styles, you may want to check out our article on male braids for ideas, or visit salon websites for examples of men's braid styles they've done. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Amy FinleyUseful photos and advice, I thank you. Do you have any suggestions for a male who wants to do micro braids? I have thick, nice, long hair and wanted to do something with it so it wasn't as hot this summer but I want to steer clear of feminine braids... if that makes any sense. Also, what is the best way to tie the braids together at the ends? I hear rubber bands tear up your hair and I would be shattered if mine got ruined. Thanks again.

-- Contributed by: MayntzThank you for the information--now all I need is a little gallery showing some styles. I've had my hair in micros for about a month and dont know what to do with it. I want to style but I don't have the time or money. Know any websites that have pictures of cute syles?
-- Contributed by: AndreaTaneya - Your stylist is more familiar with your hair's health and texture, and he can recommend what should be done to your hair as you put in the micro braids. While you wear them, you will want to be sure and use a good conditioner to keep them healthy, as well as protect them from a lot of sun and heat with protective products, scarves, or hats during the sunniest parts of the day. As soon as you remove the braids you'll want to resume using fabulous conditioners, but at that time you'll have to assess your hair and any potential damage to decide on pressing. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: MayntzAkva - Caucasian hair is finer than black hair, so yes, it usually has problems holding micro braids as long. It can, however, be a unique style for any hair type.
-- Contributed by: MayntzThank you for all of the valuable information.
I have worn my hair natural for years. Recently I found an excellent stylist who informed me that my wet n' go look was ruining my ends. From that point on, I have received deep conditioner's and pressings every two weeks.
As the summer approaches bringing tropical vacations and local boating along with it I was concerned about what to do with my hair. My stylist told me that micro braids would protect me from his scissors. So, at this point, I am confident that my hair is strong and healthy to receive the braids but I am afraid of the abuse that I will subject the style to.
When the braids are put it, should my hair be pressed or just conditioned, clipped and blown dry? Also, once the summer has ended, how soon after having the braids removed should I resume to my normal regimen of conditioning and pressing?
Thank You,
Taneya
-- Contributed by: TaneyaI was wondering if caucasian hair is harder to braid or last shorter due to the texture difference.
-- Contributed by: akvaTa'les - It all depends on how strong your hair is to begin with. Some people can rebraid almost immediately, while others may need to wait a few days or weeks for the hair to strengthen. If you condition well have have healthy hair, you should be able to rebraid fairly quickly as long as the braids aren't causing damage.
-- Contributed by: MayntzCan sommeone tell me how long I should let my hair breathe befor getting it re-braided after having micros?
-- Contributed by: Ta'lesi love your micro braid. i wish i could get some but my hair is to long.
-- Contributed by: breanna jacksonu should wait at least a week to get your hair braided after u get a perm
-- Contributed by: teonnaMicro braids can be just as stressful to hair as strong chemicals; you might want to wait a few weeks. The only surefire way to tell, however, is to consult with the stylist who will be doing your micros -- let them know the treatments you've had done recently as well as any problems you have with your hair (split ends, breakage, dryness, manageability, etc.} and they can evaluate whether or not you really do need to wait. If your hair is very healthy, you may be able to get them done right away.
-- Contributed by: MayntzHow long after a perm/relaxer should I wait to get micros?
-- Contributed by: KarissaNo u juzt seperate the hair with fingers in tiny pieces and braid witha hair and it is best if an islander (like my ancestors) does it!!
-- Contributed by: KI have shoulder length layered hair which is permed losely. If I get micro braids, will this damage my hair beyond repair? My hair tangles easily, but is pretty healthy. I always use mousturizing shampoo and conditioner.
-- Contributed by: ChristinaHi, I have a straightened hair and generally ok although a bit dry at the ends. Will it be alright if I want to get my hair micro braided for a week? I'm going camping and that is the only way I can think of doing as I can't use/bring all my hair gadjets!
-- Contributed by: Izzydo you have to part you hair when you do micros
-- Contributed by: reneeHi Emily,
Micro braids can usually be retained for 2 to 3 months. The extent of the damage depends on a variety of factors, including the conditions of your hair before braiding, but some damage is likely due to the tight compression of the hair. Good post-braiding conditioning and restoration will also help hair regain its elasticity.
-- Contributed by: Amy Finleyim mixed and i have long hair but i was wondering if you can do mico's using all my real hair
-- Contributed by: brooklinI'm caucasion, and I have somewhat thin, medium length hair. I am woundering if Micro Braids would stay in my hair if I had fake/yak hair braided in with it? Also if I had the braids in for approx 2 months, when I removed them...will my hair be badly damaged? Thanks Emily
