Umm - Yes, laser treatments can scar if you don't treat your skin properly. It is critical not to get a tan or sunburn while undergoing laser treatments -- always wear heavy sunscreen and stay out of the sun as much as possible and it won't be a problem. Other factors, such as medications, wearing makeup or other products during a treatment, and your personal skin type can also contribute to potential scarring, but an initial consultation (often done for free) will help determine if laser treatment is right for you.

Is it true that some people get scars from laser hair removal?

-- Contributed by: Umm...

Thanks for your comment - it is true that different people have different levels of skin sensitivity. While today's procedures are designed to minimize pain, some individuals might not experience the process as entirely pain free.

That is total B.S. saying that laser hair removal doesn't hurt. I am getting my upper lip done and it hurts!! They put numbing cream and the cold air and it still hurts. They do say that it is a sensitive area, but I could not imagine doing my bikini line.

Thanks for the tips, vir9inia, hopefully they can help other women avoid the same concerns.

I have PCOS and hair thick, dark, course hair (terminal hair). I was an ideal candidate because I have light pigmented skin with black hair. I had approximately 20 LHR treatments and experience absolutely NO reduction in hair. They used both the LightSheer and Aurora Lasers. I realize that because of my cystic ovaries this result may be uncommon for women with "normal" hormones.

If you do decide to go through with LHR make sure that the office/company offers a guarantee and ask for a copy, then have the manager of the office/company sign it. (I had my money returned in full, only after threatening to file suit. I had the guarantee, copies of my visits, copies of humiliating photos that they insisted on taking and all of the email correspondences.)

Do NOT make the appointment when you are mensing. You are much more sensitive during that time.

Laser hair removal can work on lighter hair -- the key is to have a good contrast between the hair and skin color, since that is how the laser's targeting works. If you have very light hair, it may take several extra treatments to be effective, so it doesn't seem to work as well.

Yeah, but it only works on dark hair.
