Leah - Unfortunately, exactly what one stylist calls a kinky curl or a loose curl can vary, so if you're looking for a specific tightness of curl it would be best to find a photo to share with your stylist so they know just what you're interested in. Check out the different types of perm pictures slideshow for inspiration!

Im looking for all the different types names of curls like kinky, loose, etc. and what they look like!!

Maddie - A longer rod is more likely to make waves than the tight curls you want. Try using an antifrizz serum to help separate your curls, and make sure they're thoroughly moisturized and healthy. If that doesn't help correct the style, you may need to wait until you get another perm.

I recently got a spiral perm and told my stylist that I liked a lot of curl. Now, instead of long ringlets, it;s stringy and drew up more than it ever has. Should I go back and ask her to use a larger rod?

Lakshmi - You should be able to perm your hair now; three months is a good length of time for your hair to recover from the straightening. Be sure to eat a diet for healthy hair, use a good conditioner, and drink plenty of water to nourish your hair from the inside out so it can be healthy enough to withstand the chemical treatments.

Emily - If your hair is thick, then it is likely weighing down the top part so there isn't as much curl. You can try layers to lighten it up and spread out the curl.

My bottom layer of hair is really curly but the top part isn't curly at all. Is there anything I could do?

Hi Ann, A couple of suggestions: 1) Don't get your perm just before your pictures. Allow yourself some post-perm time to experiment with styling it. 2) Since a tight perm can be very damaging to your hair, make sure to use a good heat protectant spray prior to straightening. You might also want to use a shine spray or serum because your hair will be drier and have less natural shine after the perm chemicals and heat styling. 3) You might want to try a virtual hair style tool to make sure the tight curls look right with your features. Best of luck!

I've been thinking about getting a perm before my senior pics and i'm not really sure. I want my hair to have the kind of curls that dominicans and also black people have. Like the really small tight ones, but i dont know if it'll will look good on me. Also, I want to have straight hair in some of my pics but i have a limited amount of time. so if i get a perm can i straighten it,take pics, then wet it and have curly hair for the rest??

Hi Julie, There are several factors that can influence how long a perm lasts. Usually tighter curls last longer, while loose curls or body waves need re-permed more frequently. You hair type and the specific type of perming solution also influence how long a perm lasts.

Since permed hair is more porous, it will absorb the chlorine and pool chemicals moreso that hair that hasn't been chemically processed. Since chlorine can be damaging to any hair, it's best to wear a swim cap. If you don't wear a swim cap, wash hair immediately after swimming to rinse out the chlorine, and make sure to use a good quality conditioner -- and consider a leave in-conditioner as well. Best of luck!

Perms can add volume to thinning hair! Talk to a professional stylist for which type of perm is best for your particular hair- she or he may recommend a looser perm which is less damaging to hair.

I was thinking about getting a perm... But I am not sure. I have thin hair, with basically no volume. If I were to get one which type would be best?

Norma - It really depends on the types of layers you have. Adding a perm will add more volume to your style, which can make it more unmanageable with layers. You might try just a wave rather than a tight perm so you can test out the curl and how your hair reacts.
